What to Know

Critics Consensus

High-Rise may not quite live up to its classic source material, but it still offers an energetic, well-acted, and thought-provoking take on its timely socioeconomic themes.

High-Rise may not be the greatest Ballard adaptation ever made, but it doesn't have to be: it stands on its own as a masterclass of the substance of style, and how stories told long ago can have often eerie, direct parallels in the future. Go to Full Review

In High-Rise the fitfully brilliant Briton Ben Wheatley, with writing partner Amy Jump, seizes what seems a perfect-fitting text -- JG Ballard's dystopian novel High-Rise -- and makes an omnishambles of it. Go to Full Review

Ben Wheatley has stumbled upon something strangely salient with dystopian protest piece 'High-Rise' but the creeping chronology fails to drive the action forward, creating something that's both busy and unfocused. Go to Full Review

For all its stylistic verve and at times potent visual beauty, High-Rise seems terribly dated, including in its appropriation of a once radical aesthetic of alienation. Go to Full Review

The layers of symbolism, analogy, and allegory are as tall as the building itself. There is a richly disturbing and dark fascination in observing how all of this frivolity comes crashing down in unpredictable and unlimited disaster. Go to Full Review

Draco S Feb 10, 2019 More slightly wide of the mark flawed genius from Wheatley. An impressive piece of filmmaking, but the attempts to make a tired old theme relevant to the present day just don't come off. Enjoy the darkly stylised world for itself, if this is your genre, but don't expect a wake up call for the real world. See more
Han L Feb 8, 2019 What did I just watch? And why did I keep watching it? The best part of the movie was all of the material destruction. I kept thinking "who on this film has to clean all of this crap up. Certainly not Tom or Sienna". What a mess. Literally and conceptually. I can't imagine anyone much liking this film. Even as a future cult favorite. Too disjointed, nonsensical, with insulting sex because humans turn to the basics in crisis, I get it, and animal cruelty. The pool scene could have been fun and gained momentum for the movie but the screenwriter or director couldn't even get that right. There are way better messes than this one. Find them before you watch this. See more
Leia W Jan 13, 2019 tough book to adapt as a movie, and sadly mr Wheatley did not do a good job of it. nice performances by evans and hiddleston, but that's about the only positive thing coming to my mind. as for people complaining about the dog abuse and the violence, the book's full of it, so i don't really see it as a problem. Jan 7, 2019 Disappointing, incoherent, and a waste of time. I'm not beneath indie movies and the abstract but this is a pointless film. Themes of social and economic disparity are important in many storylines, but since there is no actual time spent in knowing or understanding individusl characters the themes fall flat. The Hunger Games does a better job at exploring these themes. Which says a lot. This movie is more like an art instalation that provokes sickened mood and anguish instead of a film. See more
Anakin M Sep 23, 2018 I had to turn it off simply because I was so horrified by the vivid animal abuse which made my heart rench
Ron S Aug 25, 2018 All the actors were playing very good, but the end left me confused and a little disappointed. In the beginning I found it interesting and promising, but then... I don't know, I couldn't afford all that insane cruelty. Maybe because it is too prophetic? I can't be sure. A movie trying to show how destructive humans could be if they let their ferocity free. "In a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom." - J.G. Ballard (the writer of the book which the movie was based on) See more
