Critics Consensus

Clint Eastwood's sophomore outing as director sees him back in the saddle as a mysterious stranger, and the result is one of his most memorable Westerns.

The difference between this and all those “Dollars” pictures is that Clint has gone and refined the art of steel-eyed enigma. Eastwood directed this one himself and, like his earlier Play Misty for Me, it shows he has some savvy behind the camera. Go to Full Review

Eastwood holds fast to the rebel spirit of the spaghetti Westerns and revisionist "New Hollywood" Westerns of the previous decade, but packages it in a film that's slicker and more mainstream-friendly. Go to Full Review

As a director, Eastwood is not as good as he seems to think he is. As an actor, he is probably better than he allows himself to be. Go to Full Review

Poe S Apr 28, 2019 A stranger comes to a small place called Lago. He kills three bad dudes in seconds while getting a shave and that makes people aware that they got a mighty man in town. They could use him, as more bad fellas are possibly about to show up. Clint Eastwood as "The Stranger" got the entire populations by his hands. He will help them to get the bad guys, and in return he get's everything he wants. He gets cigars, whisky, leather boots and some women. The women is kind of raped, but he wins them over. He is the man. The man of few words, but big actions. OK film. I believe it's the first time Clint Eastwood directed one of his Westerns where he did the lead himself. It got some classic Western moments, but also some more violent and brutal ones. That did not favor the film back in the day. Now it's pretty average when it comes to that matter. It got some funnier parts that fail a bit but if you are up for classic Western, this is probably up your gate. 6.5 out of 10 gallons of red paint. See more
Feb 1, 2019 The best Western movie ever made!
Hermione W Dec 3, 2018 Bello ma non il miglior film del genere. Molto lento e a tratti scontato. Ciò nonostante la presenza di Clint Eastwood alza di molto l'interesse della pellicola. See more
Abraham R Dec 2, 2018 High Plains Drifter is a bleak, ugly film that (TM)s unlike anything Clint Eastwood has made since. Dismissed by some critics at the time as derivative of Eastwood mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, today High Plains Drifter appears daringly original, entering genre territory neither of those filmmakers ever dared to tread. Uneasy from the first notes of Dee Bartonï¿ 1/2(TM)s quivering score, the film is pitched somewhere between a horror movie and a psychedelic acid western. It even flirts with the supernatural and is more reminiscent of a ghost story transposed to a traditional western setting than any straightforward oater of its day. High Plains Drifter contains numerous delightful details, such as the tombstones named for Clintï¿ 1/2(TM)s film-making mentors, Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, which just goes to show there is more than one ghost at work in the wildly symbolic spaces of this fine film. This is an amazing film. If you are a fan of EASTWOOD you owe it to yourself to rent this movie asap.(Most underrated Eastwood western). See more
Kylo S Apr 17, 2018 The movie has some comedy into it but it also has a serious story. This movie is also great because it makes you wonder of Eastwood's character and past. There are some action scenes but there are more of them at the end of the movie See more
Finn S Mar 21, 2018 The first time I saw High Plains Drifter was probably in the late 1970s. Clint Eastwood stars in and directs the film. Most westerns are either about cattle drives or cowboys and Indians. High Plains Drifter is different: this is a God's-Judgment-on-the-wicked western. Clint Eastwood plays a stranger who rides into the town of Lago--and he has a really bad attitude. This stranger is also very good with a side arm. During the course of the film, the stranger ends up killing some bad guys and burning the town of Lago to the ground. There are a couple of flashbacks of one Marshall Jim Duncan being whipped to death. At the end of the film, the audience can see that the stranger was the Second Coming of Marshall Duncan: The stranger rides out of the town of Lago past the cemetery. This little guy named Mordecai is writing something on a grave marker. The stranger looks at Mordecai and Mordecai looks up and says, "I'm almost done here." Then Mordecai asks the stranger, "I never did know your name." And the stranger replies, "Yes, you do." As the stranger rides off, the camera shows the grave marker: "Marshall Jim Duncan." I have a short story entitled "High Plains Drifter" (Ethos, March & May 1995); I have a book entitled High Plains Drifter: A Hitchhiking Journey Across America (PublishAmerica, December 2008); I have a blog called "High Plains Drifter." So is this some sort of gunslinger fixation or is there method to my madness? The clue is in one Scripture: "In the mouth of two or three witnesses let every word be established." There is a lot of sin (unrepented sin) in the United States and in the world. When people continue to live in sin, eventually God's Judgment falls. The more people try to hide their sin, the greater God's Judgment. The people of Lago tried to hide the murder of Marshall Duncan, but their sin was found out. You can't hide from God. There is a scene in High Plains Drifter where this lady tells the stranger, "Ever since Marshall Duncan's death, the people in this town are afraid of strangers." _____ "When the Stranger says: 'What is the meaning of this city? Do you huddle close together because you love each other?' What will you answer? 'We all dwell together To make money from each other'? or 'This is a community'? "Oh my soul, be prepared for the coming of the Stranger. Be prepared for him who knows how to ask questions. "There is one who remembers the way to your door: Life you may evade, but Death you shall not. You shall not deny the Stranger." --T.S. Eliot Choruses from "The Rock" _____ There is another scene in High Plains Drifter where the people of Lago [the town of Lago reminds me of Algona, Iowa] are meeting at the church. One of the guys is speaking in the front of the church. The camera then pans to the right and shows a bulletin board with this Scripture: Isaiah 53: 3-4: "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Marshall Jim Duncan was whipped to death; Jesus Christ was at least nine-tenths whipped to death. The stranger riding into Lago (the first scene of the film) is a symbol of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ: not as the Lamb of God, but as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Isaiah 63: 1-6: "Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth." See more
