For discerning moviegoers, the affably disorienting "Hermia & Helena" might just be the right kind of midsummer night's dreaminess. Go to Full Review

Hermia & Helena presents a unique anomaly -- it's able to capture life at its most low-key but still manages to exemplify style over substance. Go to Full Review

Part of the charm of Hermia & Helena is in the way it freely and randomly plays with form, employing luxuriantly slow dissolves, unexpected snatches of superimposed text, and even a black-and-white film-within-the-film. Go to Full Review

This is the definition of what I think of as an “open” film...the pleasure is in the freedom to think, speculate and be continuously surprised. Go to Full Review

It seems with Hermia & Helena, Piñeiro is upping the ante a little bit and put more cinematic playfulness in his small ways. And it's lovely. Go to Full Review

It's a bloated plot where not much happens, and the only development of consequence comes near the film's end, apropos of nothing. Go to Full Review

Anakin L May 30, 2017 Hermia & Helena are two pining lovers in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' and that's about the last you'll hear of them in this film about a gaggle of arty 20-somethings rattling between fellowships in New York and home in Buenos Aires. We can't really follow their non-adventures because of the non-existent plot and the long baffling flashbacks. Not that we care. Camila and pals are uncommitted to anything much and they never develop, not even when Camila meets for the first time her father, who abandoned her mother during pregnancy. Their meeting is bland and fruitless; neither notices. There's Style by the long ton, though: a disorienting opening with people flitting in and out of the frame at close range; bits of Shakespeare's text, complete with translator's notes, pasted on screen; big close-ups [the one of the man easting a glazed doughnut is given meaning by overheard cellphone conversations]; and like that. A loud ragtime-piano score kept me awake through most of this failed undergraduate film-school project.
