Critics Consensus

Here Alone may not suffer from an overabundance of narrative substance, but it offers enough post-apocalyptic action to satisfy.

Though there's not a whole lot of plot here, Ebeltoft makes a virtue of writing economy, and director Rod Blackhurt maintains considerable interest as well as a consistent low hum of tension. Go to Full Review

Given the familiarity of its premise - a handful of survivors brave the aftermath of a deadly, rage-inducing virus - "Here Alone" is unexpectedly engaging. Go to Full Review

This is the first act of a better movie, stretched to fill a feature. Go to Full Review

The plot of Here Alone is straightforward, meaning that it is easy to figure out where things are heading. However, the characters are quite realistic, and the setting is perfectly realized. Go to Full Review

As the flashbacks are dribbled out right up until the final scenes, we are asked to project ourselves back into behavior and decisions made by Ann as a result of her obvious trauma. The problem is that no such convergence exists. Go to Full Review

Mar 14, 2019 Prepare for an hour of exposition. Despite being a horror "thriller" zombie film, you won' see any of the living dead for that entire time. While attempting to be gritty providing a slice-of-life view of the survivor's world of eating grubs and smearing feces on one's face, what it instead achieves is an opening that seems both banal and pointless. We are given little introduction to the characters, and seemingly everything that we are given could be assumed through storytelling that takes the pains to be direct, interesting, with clues here and there. Instead, we watch a lonely woman's morning routine in a dead world for an hour and see no other life form. It isn't an experience. It isn't refreshing, new, or deep. Maybe I was cranky when I watched it, but it felt like a real waste to have sat through an hour of a film for little to no action or plot development. See more
Poe W Dec 22, 2018 It unfortunately lacks story plot and does have a bit of weak structure, but Here Alone is still a good film for newgoers.
Anakin R Dec 2, 2018 An economical film, Here Alone uses a dark, natural setting for reticent people brooding in the middle of an apocalypse to tell an intimate and personal story. See more
George R Sep 17, 2018 As a parent with small daughters, I think this movie impacted me a lot more than it might have otherwise. The way Ann lost her family brought me to tears and the climax of the movie was infuriating to me (in the sense that the way characters dealt with what was happening). Overall I enjoyed it! See more
Hermione S Sep 3, 2018 This is really a step forward for "zombie" movies. The interesting part about Big Z is not the actual monster itself but how humans react to a complete collapse of the normal order of their lives. This movie really delivers that. There are very few scary scenes, but the ones they have are done exceptionally well. Instead, we have a wonderful character study about three people who have lost almost everything, including a part of their humanity, and their attempts to put themselves back together. It has a nice, very tense, ending that makes getting invested in their journey worth the trip. See more
Poe R Aug 30, 2018 Good suspenseful and well thought out apocalyptic movie, terrible end.
