What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its lurid violence may put off some viewers, but Harry Brown is a vigilante thriller that carries an emotional as well as a physical punch, thanks to a gripping performance from Michael Caine in the title role.

Harry Brown might just about have got by as a tongue-in-cheek popcorn romp, but by setting itself up as a virtual state-of-the-nation address it only draws attention to its own petty, embittered vacuity. Go to Full Review

A lot to digest stylistically and narratively, but Harry Brown is developed in an ever-increasing, shock-inducing manner and is undeniably successful. Go to Full Review

Caine, that master of gentle sadness, lets us know Harry immediately as a good man trying to get by -- and trying to understand what seems like madness. Go to Full Review

Billed by some as a spiritual sequel to the classic 1970s crime drama Get Carter, this British vigilante thriller also casts Caine as a ruthless hard man, albeit one in advancing years. Go to Full Review

Harry Brown is, for the most part, one of the most original, stylistically-assured films to come out this year, and is a deeply impressive, distinctive showcase for its newcomer director, and canonised star. Go to Full Review

Barber’s debut proves to be more than an exploitative picture about revenge; instead, it’s a startling look at social problems that have no satisfying solution. Go to Full Review

Albus R Jan 10, 2019 Gritty, no frills and superbly acted. After watching the overlong, overblown and overrated The Martian, this is a massive breath of fresh air. As the poster says - "mesmerising " See more
Harry R Jan 3, 2019 Michael Caine helps build an authentic and fascinating Protagonist. This film is a masterclass in atmosphere, tension, pacing and rich world building. I thoroughly enjoyed it. See more
Poe S Oct 8, 2018 Brilliant Michael Caine.
Kylo M Oct 4, 2018 An impressive understated film. Gritty, tense. A fine Michael Caine film
Ron W Jun 10, 2018 Harry Brown is a interestly shot, original thriller. With a very gritty and lived in world. Caine's character ,Harry Brown, has a interesting character arch, as he goes from a man who wishes to ignore the death and murder that surrounds his current life and past in the Marines, to a individual who will go towards any means to kill off the chaos that surrounds him, with Micheal Caines pratrail Of Brown working elegantly. Harry Brown also is the directed in a way which the viewer is put on the edge as the main protagonist is shown to be at danger of death at any second due to the circumstances at which he find himself in, overall I would highly recommend the film to those that which to view some really dark material that is not based on the horror genre as this film is one the darkest thrillers I have veiwed. Poe S Mar 14, 2018 Very slow moving for a revenge film, but not all bad. Just, very slow moving and not that entertaining during the slow parts (this entire movie could've been condensed into 45 min or less). I sometimes think producers and editors think movies are just art, and not a form of entertainment anymore... and Harry Brown is a great example of this. Stop trying to make an epic masterpiece and make an enjoyable film, and you might just get both. Don't know why the critic reviews are so high, unless they've been paid to rate it higher. I also don't think I've seen anything in this movie that I haven't seen before, so again, I don't understand the "fresh" rating on RT. See more
