A scruffy superhero named Hancock (Will Smith) protects the citizens of Los Angeles but leaves horrendous collateral damage in the wake of every well-intentioned feat. That's OK with Hancock; he doesn't care what people think and is just as likely to be found dozing on a park bench as saving a damsel in distress. However, after saving the life of a PR executive (Jason Bateman) and meeting the man's beautiful wife (Charlize Theron), he realizes that he may have a sensitive side after all.

Critics Consensus

Though it begins with promise, Hancock suffers from a flimsy narrative and poor execution.

The strain of messianism in Will Smith movies is becoming ever more pronounced. Go to Full Review

It becomes an entirely different film, one not really premised on the bad-superhero comedy idea, and the film is then oddly without a sense of humour, and its vague interest in satire vanishes completely. Go to Full Review
Akos Peterbencze The Screen Aug 20, 2023
Even though toned and watered down heavily, Hancock’s first hour (the uncut version) still conveys most of the character’s core, and the struggles he faces as a barely tolerated superhero in the streets of Los Angeles. Go to Full Review

It's the lack of real, substantial solutions for an outlandish fantasy tale that prevents this film from being as extraordinary as Hancock himself. Go to Full Review

Silly? Sure. However, when Smith's not trying to win Oscars he's practically perfected the art of selling silliness at the box-office. Go to Full Review

Mar 9, 2019 I wish there was a sequel....I think Will Smith showed Hancock as a character with alot of depth and funny
Occasione sprecata. See more
Hermione R Oct 28, 2018 Funny, clever, some nice action sequences and some terrific chemistry and performances from Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman. See more
Han S Sep 5, 2018 B- Though the third act reveal could've been less "superhero" esque, Hancock is a subversive and sometimes funny attempt at exploring the average everyman if he was given comic book superpowers. See more
Leia W Aug 9, 2018 It is a good movie with the original best colored superhero. He is better than the black panther by just a little bit but that is my opinion. See more
Harry G Jun 29, 2018 Must say Charlize Theron Acted good in this movie
