What to Know

Critics Consensus

It follows a predictable narrative arc, but Good Will Hunting adds enough quirks to the journey -- and is loaded with enough powerful performances -- that it remains an entertaining, emotionally rich drama.

Theodore L Apr 16, 2019 Beautiful, unfortunately outclassed by later versions of the "lost genius story" such as A Beautiful Mind. The acting is still, to this day, impressive, and the direction from Ben Affleck and Matt Daemon still makes it a timeless classic See more
Han P Apr 2, 2019 It is nothing that we haven't seen before, but I doubt that anyone cares. Its a classic movie from the 1990s that almost everyone loves. The great performances and writing alone is enough to make it a well-made drama. However, the ultimate acclaim it deserves, is when it starts to emphasize on what you want to do and not what others want you to do that really makes it stand out. These themes about setting aside the past and others to focus on your life, brings in the emotional heart and grip that easily makes viewers attached to the story. It was a little melodramatic, but was a great film overall. See more
Hermione L Mar 31, 2019 Danny Elfman on the track! Fuck yeah, didnï¿ 1/2(TM)t see that coming. Plenty of funny moments like that one ï¿ 1/2applesï¿ 1/2? line. Classic. Robin Williamsï¿ 1/2(TM) roll in this movie just makes you love him even more. RIP Robin. Wow who knew Robin Williams and Matt Damon would be some of the best acting ever. Amazing chemistry between the two. Itï¿ 1/2(TM)s crazy how smart and bright Damonï¿ 1/2(TM)s character is. He just needs an attitude adjustment and to come to terms with all the shit thatï¿ 1/2(TM)s happened to him in life that got him to where he is now. The whole saying, the funniest happiest people are actually the saddest inside, is so true. I think Robin Williams could relate to that. Wow, that scene at the park with Williams and Damon was super impactful. I donï¿ 1/2(TM)t think they couldï¿ 1/2(TM)ve casted a more better person than Robin to play his part. I think itï¿ 1/2(TM)s amazing how Will came into all of these different peopleï¿ 1/2(TM)s lives and just completely changed them around. You really get to see how everyone is either benefitting or not benefitting from Will being a part of their lives. He had a purpose all along, part from being brilliant. Iï¿ 1/2(TM)ve been in Willï¿ 1/2(TM)s shoes for most of my life. Feeling like I donï¿ 1/2(TM)t really know what it is I want to do, waisting years on jobs that have no meaning to me. Itï¿ 1/2(TM)s really beautiful seeing how Will and Seanï¿ 1/2(TM)s relationship blossoms almost like a father son thing. Iï¿ 1/2(TM)m glad Will found enlightenment and hope with the help of Sean and finally went after what he really wanted in the end. Beautiful and very inspiring movie. It just goes to show that even the poorest and most misfortuned people in the world can possess talents, skills, and intelligence that more fortunate people can have or might have. What it really comes down to is, are you going to do something about it. Are you going to go after what you really want in this life? See more
Ron W Mar 30, 2019 Good Will Hunting is hampered by an overabundance of melodramatic conversation but the film is full of powerful performances and an engaging, if predictable, story. See more
Luke S Mar 29, 2019 Accept Your Blessings. Good Will Hunting Van Sant's coaching is pretty much what you already know. His guidance isn't extraordinary but is undeniably productive. This vivacious film runs on nothing but the merit of the script. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the writers, aren't bringing anything new on the table, but it is the Disney of the dramatic movies. Incredibly confident in its ingredients, the film never stutters, not even for a frame. What's been so crowd pleasing about the script, is its ability to create a topsy-turvy world in a pragmatic one. Usually, the concept of "power" in the hand is often presented as misused by the characters and also always is craved by them. In here, Matt Damon who powerfully portrays a guy that accounts in, his photographic memory as a hindrance. His surrounding doesn't ask him to repel it, but his affection towards that very surrounding and the fear to go physically distant with it, makes him turn all this into a hobby. Damon's excruciating performance of an arrogant and blessed kid has a match that makes him rubble in a snap. And the answer is Robin Williams, that cloaks in a completely opposite persona to Damon in order to get in, in his game. If Damon likes to hurt, he keeps his wound open, if Damon oozes power and rage, he whispers warmth so gently that it makes your eyes teary within a blink. And despite of all the other tracks sprinkled amazingly in the film, Williams and Damon sharing a few laughs sitting in the room is the best asset of it, that Gus Van Sant is well aware of and encourages it like some big antic to stand tall and proud upon. Good Will Hunting is never a hunt, if anything it is the surrender in a long lasting lost game, that actually our host never cares for. See more
Mar 21, 2019 In my opinion the film is amazing and the excellent plot which in the current movies can not be persisted, it is nice to see the relationship that is formed with the caretaker and the arrogant teacher and see how the concierge can be part of a select group to solve complicated calculations.
