Critics Consensus

While not everyone will be entertained by Gladiator's glum revenge story, Russell Crowe thunderously wins the crowd with a star-making turn that provides Ridley Scott's opulent resurrection of Rome its bruised heart.

The same sturdy conventionality that made Gladiator a hit means that it’s built to last without standing particularly tall. With apologies to Ridley Scott, it holds up fine without echoing into eternity.

It is an honorable movie, so are they all honorable movies. But that's not enough. It's not great. It's a disappointment. Caesar hates disappointment, so kill it swiftly and be done.

The new film has spectacular fight scenes in dazzling sets and a familiar story about honor and betrayal, courage and cowardice. It's the perfect vehicle for some old-fashioned sword-clanging fun.

No matter how much the film may seem to condemn the life-wasting brutality of the arena, there's no denying that these grisly onscreen struggles offer moviegoers an approximation of the thrill the ancient Romans must have felt.

There's more show than substance, more noise than music, more circus than bread. Romans would understand.

The cast and directing is superb. And the violence is great when it happens, but it doesn't happen too much. Which makes the movie mainly a drama and does not entirely live up to its title.

I put this movie on my lost because it's supposed to be one of the best and most accurate movies of ancient Rome. I must say, it wasn't the "best movie ever" but it is good. It has a solid cast, good soundtrack, cool setting, and fun action. The beginning is pretty nice because it starts with a battle but the rising action of the film is a little boring, just people talking and the main character's journey to Rome. The climax and the rest after that was neat, having gladiator fights and chariots. The ending was satisfying too, being both cool and a little heart-breaking. Yet the flaws of this movie isn't ideal, it's made up by the great acting, very good. Not bad at all⦠except for the fact it is two and a half hours long.
