Gaston (Louis Jourdan) is a restless Parisian playboy who moves from one mistress to another, while also spending time with Gigi (Leslie Caron), a precocious younger friend learning the ways of high society. The platonic relationship between Gaston and Gigi changes, however, when she matures, but the possibility of something lasting seems unlikely since he won't commit to one woman. Gigi refuses to be anyone's mistress, however, and Gaston must choose between her and his carefree lifestyle.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not be one of Vincente Minnelli's best, but the charming and flawlessly acted Gigi still offers enough visual and musical treats to satisfy.

Jan 26, 2019 The best, GREATEST musical romance movie ever made! With 3 of the best movie songs ever sung: Thank Heaven for Little Girls, I Remember It Well, and the title song! See more
Rey S Jan 2, 2019 The beginning song is definitely catchy, but has way too much of a pedophilic vibe for me. The song about being glad that he is no longer young is probably the best in the movie, but didn't really make up for the other songs being "a bore." The actual film itself does a nice job showing the fleetingness of the pleasure associated with raucous living, a look into the courtesan culture, and how selfish and wanton playing with things that ought to bring love completely remove it from your life. It also brings to question where the line between a boy or girl and a man or woman ought to be drawn, which we generally now think, though who knows what they thought back then, is the age of 18. The ending was less than satisfying though because though Gigi gets the ending you may have hoped for, she is not the same person she was at the beginning of the film and you wonder if she ever truly will be again because of her guardians' meddling. Each character reeks of selfishness, and even though the film is trying to put them all in a bad light, the finale does nothing to really make the protagonists stand out as better, other than presenting us with the idea that they got married and so the relationship they ought to have is the one they end up with because they are free to act as they like rather than as social figures, which is a bit of a stretch. However, that may have been the point of the film; that only in marriage can you really be yourself. People may look down on the commoners who fall in love and raise a family, but only in that common and sacred joining can people truly find joy. See more
Albus S Sep 9, 2018 Dreadful story with pleasant characters and music.
Poe G Jul 8, 2018 an out-of-context and out-of-time portrayal.. Gigi 2 Out Of 5 Gigi is a plot driven musical feature focusing on a tale of self-created conflicts and love. The chemistry among the characters which becomes essential in such genre features, is surprisingly dull, off putting and way too textbook for it to breed any crisp through it. It is rich on technical aspects like art design, songs, production design and background score but is unfortunately lacks captivating cinematography and fine editing. The camera work is plausible and has an amazing choreography on its favor through which the makers seek attention being well aware of it. The adaptation by Alan Jay Lerner is smart if not gripping, catchy but scattered into bits and pieces as it lacks better and definite structure. Vincent Minnelli; the director, has done a tremendous work on executing the feature despite of possessing such a wafer thin script to work on. The performance by Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Gordon is decent and convincing to the allotted part if not leaves the audience in awe of it. Gigi is an out-of-context and out-of-time portrayal of a textbook tale that may be entertaining but is more pretentious than it has the potential to. See more

Harry L Oct 4, 2017 It's may be a tad on the creepy side in terms of plot, but it's so darn charming & the songs are so well staged/catchy its easy to get caught up in it. See more
