In response to political pressure from Senator Lillian DeHaven (Anne Bancroft), the U.S. Navy begins a program that would allow for the eventual integration of women into its services. The program begins with a single trial candidate, Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore), who is chosen specifically for her femininity. O'Neil enters the grueling training program under the command of John James Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen), who unfairly pushes O'Neil until her determination wins his respect.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Demi Moore admirably does her duty, but G.I. Jane's well-intentioned message is obscured by stylistic bombast and an overload of jingoism.

The training sequences... are good cinema because Ridley Scott, the director, brings a documentary attention to them, and because Demi Moore, having bitten off a great deal here, proves she can chew it. Go to Full Review

Albus W Nov 29, 2018 Should have shown her go through more of second phase and third phase
Rey W Oct 24, 2018 With a title like G.I. Jane, it would be easy to dismiss Ridley Scott's latest effort as exploitation fare. Such a reaction, however, would do the picture an injustice. On the other hand, the movie lacks the thematic depth that the film makers would like to attribute to it. Basically, this is a high-grade testosterone flick. While G.I. Jane is admittedly effective at doing most of what it attempts, the problem lies in its lack of ambition. We've seen movies like this, about honor and courage in the military. Many of the trappings may be different, but, at its core, G.I. Jane isn't all that different from John Wayne's The Sands of Iwo Jima. This film also owes more than a small debt to the acclaimed Richard Gere movie, An Officer and a Gentleman. (Passable Ridley Scott film). See more
Harry W Aug 27, 2018 An eye-opening and usually intelligent overcoming-odds military drama. It doesn't preach feminism. It preaches egalitarianism. A few of the performances are good while some are hammy. Overall, it's a misunderstood and unappreciated entry from the legendary Ridley Scott. See more
Harry S Aug 16, 2018 Demi Moore developed a real talent for starring in mid-90s films that used the veneer of feminism to merely peddle the usual misogynistic tropes, centering on the male gaze and the objectification of her body. This rambling, self-contradictory spectacle is no exception: Under the pretense of a gender equality in the military, Moore and director Scott fail to even flip the patriarchal script, simply instead going all in for uncritical martial machismo on the one hand and, on the other, at every turn finding a way to ogle Moore. Even in the duly famous scene where Moore shaves her own head-which, in the public's imagination, famously crashed her career as an object of male desire-the camera dwells on her in such a way, and then exposes her half-naked body with more and more as the movie goes on, as to simply perpetuate her constant sexualization. Of course, as is always the case with the male gaze, she gets punished in the end for embodying misogynistic desire, beaten ruthlessly for the explicit benefit of the men watching. See more
Han W Feb 10, 2018 one of Mortensen's best performances
Finn M Dec 26, 2017 Taking the the very beautiful and shapely Demi Moore and turning her into a G.I. could have been a horror Show of Barbwire proportions...but, this is a well acted, directed and entertaining movie. Viggo Mortensen is outstanding in an early role and keeps the film entertaining. There are some ill advised work out scenes with Demi that seem a little outdated. She was in great shape but close-ups of her working out in a poorly lit room seem off. See more
