Paranormal researcher Abby Yates and physicist Erin Gilbert are trying to prove that ghosts exist in modern society. When strange apparitions appear in Manhattan, Gilbert and Yates turn to engineer Jillian Holtzmann for help. Also joining the team is Patty Tolan, a lifelong New Yorker who knows the city inside and out. Armed with proton packs and plenty of attitude, the four women prepare for an epic battle as more than 1,000 mischievous ghouls descend on Times Square.

Critics Consensus

Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy -- even if it can't help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original.

Ghostbusters is fun, it's silly, and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Frankly, if you're going to make a new Ghostbusters with a female foursome as the leads and you're facing a backlash from clanging dungeons of the woman-hating internet, it seems like it would make for an epic opportunity to troll them.

There is a delicious irony that in this feminist remake, it is Chris Hemsworth as the women’s handsome but dumb receptionist, Kevin, who steals the movie from underneath everyone. Hemsworth’s performance is phenomenal.

It brings the modern changes and updates that come with making this kind of movie in 2016 and not 1984, which equates to a high level of flashy CGI and blockbuster-level action compared to the saucy and subtle original.

A wrong definition of feminism doesn't sink this entertaining film.

Imagine ghostbusters, but take away the brevity, the wit, the expertly pieced screenwriting, the concise communication of core plot points, and innovate storytelling; then replace all of that with clumsily executed slapstick, lengthy scenes of characters spouting gibberish (in perhaps the worst attempt ever made to show characters are intelligent), recycled elements that are similar enough to be unoriginal but too different to incite nostalgia, and ultimately a product which is devoid of all the character that made the original so iconic. If the fact the cast is all-female appeals to you, and is enough to carry the movie, then watch it. Otherwise, avoid this dumpster-fire.
