What to Know

Critics Consensus

A kaleidoscopic neo-noir, Gemini is a visually striking murder mystery with a convoluted but largely compelling plot and an impressive showing from Lola Kirke.

Gemini can prove to be a little bit vapid plot-wise, but the casting of Kirke and Kravitz makes the film addictively watchable. Go to Full Review

Gemini feels like the first draft of a movie that could have been developed into something more resonant. Go to Full Review

The faults of Gemini are in its screenplay, and Katz’s inability to sustain interesting character dynamics and maintain a consistent narrative. Go to Full Review

As far as recent neo-noir releases go, you really can’t go wrong with Gemini, as it’s an clever and compelling little movie with swell visuals and incredibly strong performances by Kravitz and Kirke. Go to Full Review

I really enjoyed Gemini -- Katz deftly handled the weirdness of the industry in LA within a smart drama and mystery, also peppered with humor. Go to Full Review

Ron G Apr 20, 2019 Low-key slowburn of a noir, though the ending might leave a little to be desired.
Draco S Apr 10, 2019 Despite having a lot of promising components, it's not a great film. Its first problem is that it takes a good half an hour to get going (that's quite a bit of time for a 1 1/2 hour film), but once the murder happens, it takes a turn for the better as it starts to explore those neo-noir elements. Nevertheless, despite a wonderfully charismatic performance from Lola Kirke (Kravitz and Cho are also solid) and some nice cinematography here and there, it fails to fully capture that thrilling and engaging atmosphere you'd expect. Worse still, most of the suspects are quite badly written to the point where they seem neither suspicious nor interesting (turns out the reason for that is revealed later on, but that doesn't make for good viewing in the meantime). Overall, I couldn't help but feel that it seems like a half-baked script, something that, with a bit more work, could have been quite brilliant. As it is, it's fairly average with a particularly frustrating ending that seemed to suggest there was something more (as there clearly should have been) and then abruptly rolls the credits. See more
Mar 18, 2019 Sobre la película Gemini no tengo nada que decir... muy floja, con muchos hilos sueltos, banal
Anakin R Dec 9, 2018 I'm a big fan of neon lights in general, and especially in films. The bold colours, the cool look, the fact that they only work at night, I think it creates some lovely visual images. Luckily, so does Hollywood at the moment, as it seems to be an aesthetic du jour. One film that makes use of it is this one, a neon-soaked murder mystery where it's all dark and everyone's a suspect and people speak unrealistically but it's ok because it sounds cool. Sure, it's about a Hollywood starlet who seems like a terrible human being and so you feel like she's kind of got it coming, but in general the first 3/4, maybe even 4/5, fly by with energy, Nelson Franklin (who's absolutely the film's MVP) and, as mentioned, lovely neon lights. But then it finishes so abruptly and unsatisfyingly that I genuinely ended up shouting at the TV. Don't you dare set up a mystery and then resolve that mystery in a way that seems so ridiculous you can't even bring yourself to explain it. Don't you dare do that. Also, Zoe Kravitz isn't Lisa Bonet's daughter, she IS Lisa Bonet and I'll fight anyone who says differently. See more
Poe S Oct 18, 2018 I was really enjoying the mystery and intrigue of this one, but I a little let down by the ending.
Hagrid S Oct 9, 2018 Gemini: 7 out of 10: A young assistant (Lola Kirke) to a somewhat high maintenance movie star (Zoë Kravitz) finds herself on the run from the police after a horrific crime she did not commit. Can she solve the mystery before the police, led by detective John Cho, catch up to her? The Good: This is a beautiful film. It is filled with beautiful people in beautiful places and it is incredibly well shot and framed. The scenery porn goes a long way to make this film enjoyable to watch. No matter what else is going on in the movie, the film manages to look great doing it. The acting is solid across the board with Zoë Kravitz and John Cho particular standouts. I certainly could watch a different movie with each of those characters. The first third of the movie has a languid naturistic pace that hypnotizes one. While the rest of the film goes down a different, less satisfying path, the first third is a great slice of life and well worth watching. The Bad: Lola Kirke is no Naomi Watts. She isn't awful mind you but she just doesn't have enough screen presence to lead the film. The admittedly excellent looking furniture outshines her. Her not being Naomi Watts goes a long way to why Gemini is not Mulholland Drive. Another lead actress either a star (Emma Stone of La La Land) or an up and comer with a bit more charisma (Florence Pugh of Lady MacBeth) would have done wonders for the film. Another reason that Gemini is not Mulholland Drive is the central mystery. Mulholland Drive sticks with you partially for being a bit of a mind screw. You can figure out the main mystery in Gemini from the title screen. Knowing the mystery before the characters do is not the death knell for a movie or they wouldn't keep remaking those Agatha Christie books. But if you are going to ape Mulholland Drive (And make no mistake this movie does so. In some ways quite well) you may want to throw in a twist or a red herring or two that can fool people out of short pants. The Ugly: As I mentioned before Mulholland Drive sticks with you because of the mystery that draws you in. There is another reason Mulholland Drive sticks with some. Gemini contains three beautiful actresses all playing possible lesbian or bisexual characters who take showers on screen and lie in bed together. It is rated R...for pervasive language and a violent image. This is... disappointing. In conclusion: On its own Gemini is a beautiful film with some solid performances and a great slice of life experience especially before the mystery kicks in. Unfortunately, it is also the Readers Digest version of Mulholland Drive with all the mystery and good bits cut out. See more
