Critics Consensus

Visually impressive, but this latest Ripper tale is dull and far from scary.

Anyone expecting the combo of Allen and Albert Hughes and the famed Victorian serial-killer to result in a gritty, stygian, skin-crawling horror movie will be severely disappointed Go to Full Review

This wry, atmospheric procedural spawned by a real mystery would be thorny enough without also being an adaptation. Go to Full Review

Too long by far and the accent work from Depp and Graham is questionable, but as an adaptation of Moore's comic and a text that considers the lives of Whitechapel sex workers, it's not bad Go to Full Review

Feb 17, 2019 Great opening sequence. Other than that the makers tried to hard to create atmosphere instead of characters, plot and consistency in the editing room. This movie is a mess. The acting is not great just forgettable and most of the actors are so out of place. Should have hired a better casting director. The worst part is that this movie has some great cinematography mixed in with bad lighting. It's a disappointing piece because of my expectations of the Hughes Brothers. I think it became more of the Hollywood money maker than the artistry and vision of the Hughes brothers. I don't know, this movie didn't satisfy me. It depressed me from having a bad execution of what could have been a memorable movie. See more
Albus R Oct 25, 2018 Was on cell but following whole thing. Its not scary at all. The plot is based on Jack The Ripper, the familiar tale. The setting was great, really making it feel like London in the 1880's. Johnny Depp was OK. nothing special. The movie was ok/good. See more
Hermione P Sep 18, 2018 From Hell is a strange movie by the Hughes brothers. Loosely based on the Alan Moore graphic novel which itself is based on the Jack the Ripper murders this is a beautiful looking film. The production design and atmosphere is eerily reminiscent of the actual period and the acting is also good from everyone involved. But I felt the pacing was an issue or more importantly I felt there was no structure to the film. Having said that the cinematography and style more than make From Hell a recommendation if you want some Victorian gothic action. (A decent one time watch). See more

Draco W Apr 18, 2018 Watched this film last night. I am not sure if it was a hit in 2002, but I feel like it may have been preferred then, rather than now. A little bit outdated and Depp's performance is a bit weak. But I liked how the film reminded me of a theatre production due to the colours and strong staging. It's a one watch, but you might enjoy it. See more
