What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not have been necessary to remake the 1985 cult classic, but the new Fright Night benefits from terrific performances by Colin Farrell and David Tennant -- and it's smart, funny, and stylishly gory to boot.

If Fright Night is meant to be a send-up of the genre it takes itself too seriously - I can't remember a single decent joke, now I think about it - and if it isn't a send-up then it doesn't take itself seriously enough. Go to Full Review

The fun of this new Fright Night is in the nuances, the quirky character bits and the sly bits of intelligence that sparkle along the way. Go to Full Review

Fright Night 3D qualifies as a successful entry in a tricky genre - blending flip humour and emotional intensity in a way that feels true after its fashion to the facts of teenage life. Go to Full Review

...it’s not horrible, and it’s not great; if we rated it like my high school rated my work, it would get a passing grade, so 6 out of 10 seems fair here. Go to Full Review

A successful horror comedy knows when to scare you and when to ease your fears with humor, and Gillespie effectively blends shocks and laughs. Go to Full Review

“Fright Night” just isn’t scary at all. There are a couple of loud jump scares, but in terms of actual creepiness, nope. Go to Full Review

Anakin R Dec 20, 2018 This is a remake of the older 80s film and should stand as proof that no matter what star cast you have and how technology has developed so much to aid the filmmaker, it is always a wise decision to never tinker with the original. If for no other reason then basic psychology says that people will always, no matter what, compare the film to the original and chances are high they will always prefer the original. This Fright Night; the remake seems like a lazy cash grab with the 3-D acting as grotesque and gaudy ornamentation. Any special qualities one could ascribe to the 1985 movie have been lost in translation. See more
George S Dec 12, 2018 I'm normally not a fan of vampire movies but this one was really good. Having Anton Yelchin and the beautiful Imogen Potts, supported by Colin Ferrell and Toni Collette was a great casting decision. They worked really well together and were a treat to watch. The story was initially very cliche, but they quickly set aside the popular tropes and went with fresh ideas. The execution was great and so were the visuals (setting/atmosphere + the locations/prop pieces). This is a really fun watch. The only part that pissed me off was a twist at the end that brought everyone together again... they should've left it as is and had a dark conclusion (how good can a battle be if there aren't any costs)! Would definitely recommend this, not as a scary movie, but as a fun vampire flick. See more
Oct 30, 2018 There are so many things within this movie that stretch credibility or make no sense. Why does nobody leave their house after hearing an exploding building? Why does it take so long for Tennant's character to suss security is gone? Who in the hell would think it was a good idea to have sex on the floor in the middle of an apartment building people are entering and leaving from? Interruptions? You can forget simple logic with this movie. Sure it does a couple of new things like blowing up Charlie's house or the slow cornering of Ed by Jerry but in trying to remake it loses vital ingredients that made the original so good. Not only that but damning of all Gillespie has replaced the camp but enjoyably fun of the original with a psychological horror/thriller. The original was made as a loving homage to Christopher Lee and Vincent Price horror movies. It loved all of that. In remaking the film and trying to modernise it, in getting rid of the 80s camp value and replacing it with a gritty atmosphere (a common mistake of remakes) the writer and director end up showing a complete disinterest and hatred of the source material and B-horror movies. It just lacks soul. In fact the only good thing about Chris Sarandon's cameo in this film is to see him finally get a taste of his own medicine which is fun...for about ten seconds. It all adds up to yet another pointless remake in a long list of pointless remakes Hollywood continues to push. Not only that but the presumption a modern day Fright Night movie should jettison everything that tapped into it's homage filled roots and made it fun because it would be dated today is insulting. Yikes, talk about being uncool Brewster. See more
Oct 27, 2018 Was So shitty... I went through every haunted house and I wasn't scared once and I am the most easily scared person. I am so disappointed and I will never be attending to another fright night again. See more
Draco S Jun 19, 2018 Featuring charismatic performances from Colin Farrel and David Tennant, Fright Night is a solidly bloody vampire film that's just plain fun to watch. See more
Rey W Aug 25, 2017 The good type of over the top performance from both David Tennant and Colin Farrel creates an entertaining vampire movie.
