When arrogant and stubborn Civil War hero Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday (Henry Fonda) arrives in Arizona with his daughter, Philadelphia (Shirley Temple), to assume command of the Fort Apache outpost, he clashes with level-headed Captain Kirby York (John Wayne). Viewing the local Native Americans through an ignorantly negative lens, Thursday is determined to engage them in battle for his own glory, despite the warnings of York -- an act of folly that will have dire consequences.

The nonlinear narrative, with its infinite digressions and asides, is designed less to tell a story than to present a world-a world dense in physical detail and fraught with moral challenges. Go to Full Review

Feb 1, 2019 The best Western movie ever made!
Aug 6, 2018 I love fort apache so much. It is definitely in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. And It is definitely one of John wayne's best films. Henry fonda, Shirley temple, Ward bond and John agar were also good in it. It is a masterpiece of a western. See more
Draco S Nov 3, 2017 Monument Valley looks great (in B&W) in the first film in John Ford's so-called "Cavalry" trilogy. Henry Fonda plays an arrogant Colonel who arrives to take command of the regiment at the titular Fort and rubs everyone in the good-natured community the wrong way. He removes an old friend of his wife's from a leadership role, pushes troop leader John Wayne around, and tries to prevent his daughter (19-year-old Shirley Temple!) from dating a young lieutenant (John Agar, Temple's real-life husband), the son of non-commissioned war hero Ward Bond. Ford intersperses scenes of the community (dinners, dances) with comic relief (from drunkard Sergeant Victor McLaughlin and his mates) and the tense scenes with Fonda (there are no relaxed scenes with him). Ultimately, when the Apaches, led by Cochise and Geronimo, escape their reservation to Mexico (after being exploited by the government-operated trading store proprietor), Wayne and Fonda disagree about how to best deal with the situation. Fonda refuses to listen to reason and we are treated to an epic battle scene. For what it's worth, the portrayal of Native Americans is relatively benign, although Fonda spouts a bunch of negative stereotypes; since he is the bad guy (and Wayne opposes him on this ground), the stereotypes are theoretically rejected as well. This probably wasn't forceful enough to have any effect on the cinema-going audience of the time, however. I've spent a lot of time avoiding John Ford's westerns but they do have a certain warmth and sense of place. See more
Han S Jul 5, 2017 Turhaa joutokäyntiä liikaa. Ihme pukuoopperaa välillä. Olisi voinut ihan hyvin tiivistää 20-30 minuutilla.
Finn S Jun 24, 2017 As with any Fonda, Wayne, Mclaglen, or Ward Bond western they are entertaining; whether the dialog, or plot are Academy Award level or not. Must see and Waynes buddy that played Mose in The Searchers. See more
George L Aug 17, 2008 Between 2.5 and 3. Classic John Ford movie, but with good points of humour, an atypical perspective about problematic of native Americans, some considerations about post-civil war period, and a realistic point of view of the pathetic,military-ideal figure of the chief of the company.
