A veritable chameleon, investigative reporter Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher (Chevy Chase) might drive his editor (Richard Libertini) up the wall, but he always produces great pieces for the newspaper. When his next story is about the drug trade taking place on the beach, Fletch goes undercover as a homeless man. Unaware of Fletch's true identity, businessman Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson) offers Fletch $50,000 to kill him. Intrigued, Fletch decides to unearth the full story behind the offer.

Critics Consensus

Quotably funny -- and fast-paced enough to smooth over the jokes that don't land -- Fletch is one of the best big-screen vehicles for Chevy Chase's brand of smug silliness.

Admittedly, the storyline weaves all over the place, but no matter - Chase's performance and a plethora of daft and witty situations carry it past some structural rough spots. Go to Full Review

Fletch is first and foremost a Chevy Chase vehicle, and how well the film works for you will depend heavily on how much you enjoy Chase’s shaggy comic style, which freely mixes deadpan dialogue and physical slapstick with heavy doses of sarcasm Go to Full Review

Oct 12, 2018 I know we're all wondering when is Chubby Chase going to do another Fletch movie it's been a long time since we've seen Fletch I think we would like to know where he is now See more

Luke M Feb 10, 2018 nice fun movie for the genre, good use of Chase
Ron W Nov 18, 2017 One of the more frustrating 80's comedies I've ever seen, as "Fletch" is not only quotable, engrossing, and fun, it features probably one of the best performances from Chevy Chase this side of "Caddyshack." My problems with "Fletch" lie within the tonal inconsistencies that I found all throughout though. Again, it's hilarious at times, with riotous dialogue delivered through expert deadpan. It also features a really compelling mystery that kept me interested and wanting more. But the more and more I thought about the two sides of this "Fletch" coin, the more and more I realized that - like a coin - I could never actually see both sides at the same time. The two tones never really meshed as well as I would have liked. But, with that said, it's still an underrated comedic feat that should be appreciated by more. See more
