In February and March 1945, U.S. troops fight and win one of the most crucial and costly battles of the war on the island of Iwo Jima. A photo of U.S. servicemen raising the flag on Mount Suribachi becomes an iconic symbol of victory to a war-weary nation. The individuals themselves become heroes, though not all survive the war and realize it.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Flags of Our Fathers is both a fascinating look at heroism, both earned and manufactured, and a well-filmed salute to the men who fought at the battle of Iwo Jima.

It's a strong, intelligent film - and a deliberately unsatisfying one, since it possesses all the frustrating scrappiness of real life. Go to Full Review

Eastwood has been more interested in breaking down myths and showing us the human cost of violence and conflict. Flags of Our Fathers soberly and intelligently continues that tradition. Go to Full Review

Flags of Our Fathers is much the same as the classic films it proudly echoes - that war is hell, and though some are worth fighting, doing so exacts a huge human cost that cannot be glorified with the mere waving of Old Glory. Go to Full Review

“Flags” and “Iwo Jima” were Mr. Eastwood at his most daring and creative. He made two movies at basically the same time about an historical event from different and previously unknown perspectives. This was an artist at his most insightful and audacious. Go to Full Review

Clint Eastwood has become a serious and excellent director that doesn't shy away from examining difficult and controversial themes with characters who confront complex moral dilemmas... This movie reaffirms his position [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

There is nothing wrong with having good intentions. It is just a shame when those intentions turn a naturally powerful story into a less-than heroic product. Go to Full Review

Leia G Feb 7, 2019 good historical movie, probably wont watch more than once acting was great camera work did a good job conveying the emotions of the characters storyline was very interesting. if you dont know all the history, this will be fun to watch pacing is slow and can feel drawn out. it seems like thats the only thing really stopping people from fully enjoying this movie the initial invasion scene of iwo jima is absolutely insane, its hard to find movies with an action scene so captivating overall it was great to watch See more
Leia S Jan 1, 2019 Many think Clint Eastwood is a hard patriot who leans to the right but in actuality he is a man of convictions and doesn't take sides or decisions based on emotions. This film doesn't decorate the soldiers who raised the famed flag in Japan that day but shows how in actuality the soldiers themselves were just reluctant heroes. Clint Eastwood juxtaposes memories of the preparation leading up to and in addition to the actual events at the Battle of Iwo Jima with ceremony after ceremony of War Bond fund-raising and the different effects it had on each man. To some, this jumping around, time-wise, may be a bit confusing, especially with the inconsistent use of a narrator. The battle scenes were, at times, gruesome and graphic, but were not overdone and successfully instilled a sense of what is was really like in the costliest battle the United States fought. The most gruesome scene, though, was left to the imagination. This was the first depiction of the Battle of Iwo Jima I've seen that attempts to divulge the mostly unknown faces of the men made famous by a photograph and the problems they faced at home. Great filmmaker that man- Clint Eastwood. See more
Abraham S Sep 13, 2018 Client Eastwood delivers yet another interesting and THOUGHTFUL film. The true price that these men paid for our freedoms and the near IMPOSSIBLY for those of us not directly connected to the events to appreciate the price they continued to pay through out their lives. Draco W Aug 10, 2018 The non-linear narrative is jarring in the first half, and slower than it should be. Once the second half starts, the ball really picks up and the structure of flashbacks, narration and look at fame from up close really show a darker side of war than initially believed. See more
Abraham W Jul 2, 2018 A nuanced meditation on the concept of heroism, the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers of World War II and the treatment of our veterans. See more
Harry R Apr 25, 2018 Gut punching. The injustice of it all just slams you in the kidneys. How we treat our veterans is abysmal. The music is beautiful, and I would personally recommend watching Letters from Iwo Jima before this one, because it really enhances the experience. I don't know how this film didn't win an Oscar, disgraceful. See more
