What to Know

Critics Consensus

With a production as audacious as the feat it's depicting, Fitzcarraldo comes by its awe-inspiring spectacle honestly, even when it declines to examine the darker implications of its hero's dream.

The film itself is a leaden variation on [Herzog's] Aguirre, the Wrath of God. It’s Aguirre without the inspired images or great subject. Go to Full Review

This botched, shapeless, gratuitous, ignoble, neo-colonialist film is so poorly made, written, edited, and directed that its centerpiece, its raison d'tre -- the honest-to-God hauling of a boat up a mountain before your eyes -- is meaningless. Go to Full Review

It has a striking, triumphant conclusion, even if the pacing and significance of the voyage aren’t nearly as momentous as in Herzog’s prior works. Go to Full Review

The film only benefits from Herzog’s location shooting and demands of realism with spectacular photography and astounding physical effects, notably the steamship’s headlong rush down the rapids. Go to Full Review

Draco R Oct 28, 2018 This is undoubtedly the best German film ever, the various adventures that occurred to make this film, were worth taking into account the results. With good actors, good special effects and a good story. Highly recommend. See more
Poe S Aug 25, 2018 Fitzcarraldo is sort of sluggish at the start, but as the story progresses, it becomes more and more intriguing. I don't care if there are creative or technical flaws. The fact that they lifted an entire ship over a hill completely overshadows any of those flaws. Just watch it. It's a boat going over a hill and that's the movie. I would recommend reading up on the grueling, adventurous shooting of the movie which is just as interesting if not more so than the movie itself. See more
Ron W Aug 6, 2018 Werner Herzog's Masterclass on Obsession Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo may be remembered as the film wherein he lifted a steamboat over a mountain while fighting off bugs, disease, famine, and Klaus Kinski trying to kill everyone, but it is precisely because of his obsessive persistence in completing the film that Fitzcarraldo is remarkable. It is a parallel on film of Herzog's struggles in finishing the filming of Fitzcarraldo much like Klaus Kinski's character's obsession with opera that leads him to undertake his Amazonian expedition for rubber to fund his opera house. Herzog appears to have perfected his artistic film-making style from the years doing Aguirre: The Wrath of God & Nosferatu the Vampyre, for Fitzcarraldo is immaculately filmed. Gorgeous scenery, shots of the boats, close ups showing so much emotion and turmoil. Herzog's penchant for showing natives, animals, and nature in their natural surroundings with real reactions is on full display. His cinematography is truly astounding and a wonder to look at in Fitzcarraldo. This film utilizes its theme of opera's drama and intensity with its lush sets, real props, atmospheric music as well as operatic performances within the film itself. Herzog's diegetic sounds are audible throughout the movie. The actors bring the Peruvian jungle to life. Claudia is particularly persuasive in the first half where she is present. Then, Klaus Kinski, as usual in Herzog's films, is the main attraction. Kinski's method acting as the totally obsessed Fitzcarraldo is utterly brilliant and hypnotic. His wild eyes view over all as all he hears is his opera. Opera is his passion and motivation. Kinski portrays this brilliantly. I understand Herzog had to deal with Klaus Kinski going nuts in the jungle in order to film this, but perhaps, it was worth it for Fitzcarraldo is Herzog's masterpiece. Kinski wants his opera house, and he will stop at nothing for that musical bliss. I recommend seeing at least watching Fitzcarraldo for its achievement in the perseverance of making the film as well as its insane charms as a stand alone Werner Herzog piece. Art films have been filmed that are more mad, but none have been filmed with the same mad drive of Herzog to complete the one and only Fitzcarraldo. See more
Theodore P May 12, 2018 Fitzcarraldo is a 1982 West German adventure-drama film written and directed by Werner Herzog. Although a lot of effort has gone into what must have been a difficult task, the film seemed too amateurish for me. Its slow pace failed to hold my attention. GGNF 1001 See more
Hagrid M Mar 11, 2018 One movie that cannot be forgotten no matter how hard you may try to forget. Director Werner Herzog overcame his lead Actor's illness, another character's celebrity to be called away for "another concert", and dealing with the local indians miscmmunications in the peruvian jungles. So Herzog forged ahead, getting kalus kinski as the lead, "Fitzcarraldo". Then Herzog managed to get the locals to "transform" that large ship over the thin strip of land to the next river. Like the movie or not, credit must go to herzog to make a film that no one can even copy-cat. Was Kinski a fruitcake? It matters not; kinski makes the movie what it is. That quality Kinski had was perfect for this Herzog production. Herzog won best director at the 1982 cannes film festival and this movie was nominated for the coveted palme d'or, so there s some great validation for herzog's dogged determination and creativity. In closing this review, fitzcarraldo was a true work of art, a true work of an uncompromising vision that will live forever. See more
