Fight Club isn’t powerful enough, or good enough, to be called “prophetic.”

Unfortunately, much like "Starship Troopers" (1997), when satire is done too well, it can seem like a clarion call for true believers instead of the declaration of absurdity that it is.

The error in many subsequent interpretations of Fight Club is believing Tyler Durden's philosophy. The film itself rejects it.

Modern materialism takes a beating in Fight Club. So do its practitioners. So do those who wish to destroy it. So does the audience. But in this case it's an exhilarating pounding, administered by a master manipulator.

A dazzling entertainment that wants us to luxuriate in violence as we condemn it; a brilliant solution to depicting the divided self as a protagonist; and proof that Brad Pitt, as well as Edward Norton, can really act.

It's a dangerous and unnerving movie because, while they are manifestly defending civilised values, Fincher and company involve us at a visceral level in the seductive attractions of what the film attacks.

Fight Club is precisely the sort of movie that cultural watchdogs blame for the downfall of civilization. In his peculiar, perverse way, it is civilization that Fincher is trying to save.

It ultimately crumbles and its insights prove less than piercing, but Fincher does something truly audacious: building a mainstream movie from subversive impulses, roiling anger and sarcasm.

The movie is not merely the best of the week, month or even year, but a singular event, like the opening of 2001 or Pulp Fiction. You know you are seeing something brand new and emotionally powerful even if you don't necessarily know what it means.

Fight Club promises a lot and delivers quite a bit less. In between, there are scenes of raw brutality, some funny dialogue, and a premise that's so old, it feels like a guest that has overstayed its welcome. In short, it's a mess.

If Fight Club is unlikely to kick off a revolution it still stands to leave a little splatter on the ground. Addressing many of the same issues as American Beauty... it's a reaction to a civilization built on credit cards and cell phones.
