An impressively rendered if decidedly old-fashioned retelling of the American Civil War's one-day Battle of New Market. Go to Full Review

Save for a brief prologue, there isn't a pro-slavery Southern man to be found in this fantasyland vision of the Civil War ... Go to Full Review

Jul 6, 2018 I thought the movie was great.
Harry P Sep 10, 2017 A Civil War drama involving the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute being called up to active duty by the Confederates for the Battle of New Market. Supposedly there to be held in reserve and not see battle, the cadets find themselves reinforcing the front line and leading the charge against the Union forces. The field they charge across is a muddy, soupy mess, causing many of their shoes to be sucked into the miasma to be left behind - thus the name of the movie. Mildly moving. Quite watchable. See more
Hermione W Aug 17, 2017 I love that this film properly displays a relatively unknown pice of southern history. Costumes and battle scenes are well done and the overall filmwork is pretty good too. My absolute favorite thing about it is that it shows what really happened. There's no anti-Confederate nerrative that gets shoved down everyone's throats these days. It shows what the south was truly fighting for: defense of their country and defiance of tyranny. See more
George L Apr 2, 2017 It's hard for people to imagine that confederate soldiers were humans with complex loyalties and motivations. And, God forbid, that many white people fought for a cause to which they didn't subscribe...yet still fought, for their fellow soldiers and their families and a host of other reasons. Life is messy. This film is complimentary, not anathema, to the realities of the Civil War. See more
Luke G Mar 20, 2017 another civil war tale based upon true events what i liked was this is told from the southern perspective.
Kylo W Feb 3, 2017 Better than average.
