Expertly assembled to draw out the suspense of danger lurking around each vacant hill... the movie creates a world of paradoxical sentiments: immediate decision-making pitted against the immovable forces of ideology and moral codes. Go to Full Review

Mortensen's post-Lord of the Rings choices have been an idiosyncratic mix: His my-way-or-the-highway approach doesn't always pay off, but it does here with engrossing results. Go to Full Review
Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture May 1, 2015
What makes it work is the solemn efficiency of director David Oelhoffen's storytelling and the quiet intensity of the two leads: The rough tenderness of Mortensen's gaze plays off well against Kateb's conflicted demeanor. Go to Full Review

David Oelhoffen’s film Far from Men is a gripping and immersive western that uses the genre to explore another colonialist nightmare, that of the French occupation of Algiers. Go to Full Review

Unique location aside, it will show you many things you have seen before, only now you get to see Viggo Mortensen and Reda Kateb do them. Thing is, they do it good, and the film is never dull or without cinematic beauty. Go to Full Review

Theodore W Apr 27, 2018 The beauty of the film's setting by itself is worth 4 stars.
Draco P Aug 18, 2017 Wonderfully directed, beautiful cinematography and superb acting, the whole crew did an amazing job at delivering a heartfelt and realistic feeling story. Based on the connection between two strangers, the film captures the strength and kindness that humanity is sometimes capable of, but also just how blind we can be to the plight of others, especially when the excuse of following orders, the law, ancient traditions or, I dare say, religion is involved. Abraham W Jul 4, 2017 Slow but beautifully filmed drama with Arab and French subtitles. One should not let oneself get scared away by that fact, because the bleak landscapes, subtle Nick Cave soundtrack and Mortensen's outstanding acting more than make up for it. The ending is particularly touching. See more
Kylo S Feb 26, 2017 Rarely is a film's panorama so sparse, vast, empty, dry - a rock strewn sun-bleached type of Hell-on-Earth - and without any other means of mobility other than walking available yet this story is a real oasis of the human soul as portrayed in this superb, subtle masterpiece by the entire cast, but especially by the two lead actors. The actual feeling of hopelessness is it's most riveting character and it plays out perfectly from beginning to end but leaving the audience to wonder why he is leaving and where he is going. Teaching kids to read is no crime, rather Angels's work and majestic. See more
George P Dec 25, 2015 Even in its moments of action, Far from Men is slow and considered. Amazing cinematography throughout. Viggo Mortensen is like a fine wine, improving with age. See more
Rey S Nov 10, 2015 I've always marveled at Viggo Mortensen's acting ability outside Middle-Earth. He's proven time and again what a versatile and talented actor he is. And this time is no different as he not only spoke two languages fluently, but also gave a powerful performance. Far From Men is too quiet and slow-burning for my taste but the pleasant cinematography sure makes up for the dullness. See more
