The year is 1926, and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident, were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them draws on Harry Potter's rich mythology to deliver a spinoff that dazzles with franchise-building magic all its own.

Fantastic Beasts is a charm, excelling when it's allowed to be its own creature and falling short only when it's forced to pay its franchise dues. Go to Full Review

Rowling throws her audience into the fray without developing personalities we grow to love. As a result, Fantastic Beasts feels underwhelming, if diverting for the duration. Go to Full Review

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is an unexpected return to Rowlings wizarding world but with anything, the unexpected surprises are sometimes the best. Go to Full Review

Draco S Apr 27, 2019 Fantastic Beasts is a fun start to a series set in a world we love. The film however does not rely on the premade world but instead chooses to place us in a new one. Our main character is already well developed and well acted from the start and I would think it would be difficult to develop Newt much further. I am happy to say however that we really get to see Newt's motives regarding not politics but instead the well-being of his animals. Kowalski is funny and an overall pleasant sidekick, especially when it comes to magic. Sadly the bigger plot points involving credence fall flat and Percival is not a very deep villain. See more
Rey P Apr 25, 2019 The magic realism that Harry Potter built up in seven movies is rapidly thrown away. As a movie, it is as a complete success, as the start of a new saga, it needs polishing See more
Leia S Apr 23, 2019 Jacob great character
Albus R Apr 22, 2019 Interesting and unique from Harry Potter.
Apr 18, 2019 A very disappointing start to the Harry Potter prequels. The first problem is the main character, Newt Scamander. He's not nearly as interesting as the supporting characters, such as Tina, Graves, or even Jacob, as the only thing he does in the movie is capture magical creatures that escaped from his suitcase. His storyline felt irrelevant to the main plot, which involves an entity destroying NYC and the wizards and witches has to stop it before they're exposed to the Muggles. Sorry, but Muggles sounds better. The movie falls apart when Queenie was introduced, and her relationship with Jacob felt forced. Ezra Miller's character was also very annoying. I understand that his character was abused, but his constant whining made him the most irritating and unlikeable character in the film. There were so many plotholes and the plot twists were very predictable. The movie also tried to condense its mythology, but I don't understand why J.K. Rowling had to cram in so much mythology into one film when there are four more movies planned for this franchise. She wrote the screenplay as if she's writing a book. I understand she wanted to expand the Harry Potter universe, but Fantastic Beast was just more of the same but done better in the Harry Potter movies. The Fantastic Beast universe isn't nearly as immersive as the Harry Potter universe. Nothing in Fantastic Beast felt like it was set in the '20s, except for the clothes and vehicles. The wizarding world looks almost identical to Harry Potter, as if nothing has changed in the past 70 years or so. I guess it wouldn't be nearly as nostalgic if the wizarding world in Fantastic Beast looked drastically different. I do like the cast (with the exception of one) and the set-pieces, but Fantastic Beast was underwhelming. It's not even nearly as good as the worst Harry Potter movie and I don't think I would be interested in the sequel, unless Tina returns in the next film. See more
