What to Know

Critics Consensus

Extinction has a few intriguing ideas, but they -- and some game performances from its talented stars -- are lost in the movie's muddled plot and frustrating pacing.

It's a simple, efficient sci-fi thriller with big Blockbuster aspirations but without much charisma or soul. Go to Full Review

The big twist is a good one, there are some decent action sequences and Lizzy Caplan is always good to watch, but there isn't enough here to keep things from dragging. Go to Full Review

It's a narrative that is familiar in most of sci-fi, but how thoroughly this film follows that preceding movie's beats is disappointingly uncreative. Go to Full Review

Feels as if it would work better as a pilot for a television series - perhaps chiefly because the conclusion is a mere setup for further tales in this speculative world. Go to Full Review

Poe W Mar 19, 2019 Good effects and interesting premise, but very messy plot. The two girls probably cried a literal ocean amount of tears when shooting this movie. Every scene involved the girls bawling their eyes out. The movie had an interesting plot twist halfway through, but left many major plot holes and questions, which I canâ(TM)t address without ruining the film. The back and forth through different timelines wasnâ(TM)t seamless and confused the story. It is hard to believe this was almost a theatrical release by Universal. See more
George S Mar 5, 2019 It features two of the MOST ANNOYING children in all of movie history. Peña as a leading man is way, way off, It's hard to tell if the fault lies in the direction-- or Peña himself. I can't stomach that hoary movie trope where killers are coming on strong, right behind them, just around the corner, but the heroes, on reuniting, have to have a great big kumbaya group grope as if nothing else were going on at all. Then the killers round the corner and start shotting (bad shots). "Oops, we forgot! Killers are right behind us!" Puh-lease! Just a monumentally tedious movie. Who made this pompous, godawful stew,, robots? See more
Feb 28, 2019 Holy shit this was bad. Wanted so desperately to be deep and meaningful but missed the mark on every count. Just wow. So trash lol See more
Kylo M Feb 28, 2019 At first I thought this was a decent alien invasion/end of the world movie, better than Independence Day and not as good as War of the Worlds, but then there was a twist. Then there was a biiiig twist. It was totally original to me- havent seen anything like it. The only part that really annoyed me was (without spoiling) the part in the tunnel where it was like - yeah, you guys just do your thing and dont worry about the rest of us... - *eye roll* I can see a lot of people not liking this but I found it fully enjoyable. Even gives you something to think about. See more
Feb 27, 2019 Extinction is bland, boring and uninspired. What is ultimately a thought-provoking story with hints of originality and an awesome twist. The film is, unfortunately, let down by its less than stellar execution. Story: Extinction has a quite interesting and thought-provoking underlying story that is sadly bogged down by the boring characters. There is little to no tension and you will find yourself asking "why should I even care about these characters?" Towards the end of the film there is a surprisingly great twist, and we finally start to understand these otherwise boring characters. If the execution and build-up had had had been better, it could have been one of the greatest twists in cinema. Cinematography: Pretty standard Sci-Fi/Action cinematography, but this is where we start to get glimpses of the film originality. There were a few shots where I thought they were well done and above your average shot, but other than that it was very typical. Extinction would have been a much more enjoyable experience had it distinguished itself earlier in the film as opposed to its back half. A huge missed opportunity. See more
Kylo S Feb 13, 2019 I liked seeing Michael Peña as a leading man. He doesn't come off as a leading man for an action scifi but he was perfect as the downtrodden demi-hero of this one. What at first seemed to be a low-grade B movie pulled a reveal that was perfectly fitting and upped the legitimacy of the film. Well executed and fun, with a lot more depth than it let on. A great popcorn flick with some meat on it. See more
