Author, actor and political commentator Ben Stein poses the argument that intelligent design and evolution are both valid scientific explanations for the development of life on earth, and that institutions that don't embrace both views are guilty of stifling academic freedom. Stein makes his case through film clips, interviews with creationists and scientists and his own acerbic observations, including the opinion that Darwin's theory of evolution is partially responsible for the Holocaust.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Full of patronizing, poorly structured arguments, Expelled is a cynical political stunt in the guise of a documentary.

Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Dec 4, 2008
This film is cheerfully ignorant, manipulative, slanted, cherry-picks quotations, draws unwarranted conclusions, makes outrageous juxtapositions, segues between quotes that are not about the same thing, tells bald-faced lies, etc. Go to Full Review

Ignorance may be bliss, but encouraging it, as Expelled does, ought to be a crime. Go to Full Review

Don't expect any serious debate here about God and evolution. This documentary is like watching a paranoiac making fun of a hysteric. Go to Full Review

I won't go into the details of the film's polemic. But one of its problems is that it has a double agenda. Go to Full Review

A the point where the film starts exploiting the Holocaust to score cheap shots.. there's no laughter left, only pure, unbridled disgust. Go to Full Review

Hagrid W Apr 10, 2019 Every desperate atheist and Darwinist locked in sync are doing exactly as expected: attacking good questions with insults. The review scores and their petty anger towards Ben Stein are completely avoiding the glaring fact about Darwinism that is indisputable: it's a mess. It's a poorly defined theory that is filled with too many unanswered questions. It's a theory that asks the same of its believers as any religion does: to accept most of it on faith. Those who are brave enough to look honestly at science can easily see the creator screaming from every part of it. Saying "here I am!". One huge way the critics, especially the ones with really thin skin, are being completely dishonest in their criticism is when they say the film proports that darwinists are nazis. The film does nothing even close to calling all Darwinists nazis. In fact it says constantly, many times, that "of course not all proponents of Darwinism are inclined to support naziism". The film couldn't have been more clear in what it's asking the viewer to do. It's asking the viewer to look at historical examples of what great supporters and believers of Darwin did with their mindset and how they wished to use it to change society, and it asks the viewer to simply question what they've been taught their whole life. George W Feb 19, 2019 Excellent depiction of the science community and it's "religion"
Theodore P Nov 7, 2018 This film was almost good.
Ron G May 9, 2018 OMG how many people did you need to cut mid sentence to make it appear they say something that you still need to twist and turn to make it vaguely appear it support your position? See more
Theodore W Apr 21, 2018 amazing and very interesting
Abraham S Apr 15, 2018 Interesting, to the point and sometimes even funny..... in the good way of course.
