Critics Consensus

The Exorcist III is a talky, literary sequel with some scary moments that rival anything from the original.

Watching The Exorcist III is a frustrating experience, with both cuts of the film - one a victim of studio tampering, the other imperfectly restored - pointing to the better version of themselves that, like Karras, remains hidden within. Go to Full Review

Against his will, Blatty added the sound-and-fury finale, and it's easily the weakest aspect of his movie. But that's mainly because everything that comes before it is so hauntingly understated. Go to Full Review

Too much of the movie takes place in dark rooms where people describe horrors that might more profitably have been on the screen, and the plot is a house of cards that constantly collapses. Go to Full Review

with a crudely stuck-on exorcism scene at the end, this isn't a particularly satisfying Exorcist film, but it is a memorable, remarkably restrained horror film with one stand-out sequence that you’ll never, ever forget…. Go to Full Review

The standout performance is Brad Dourif as the Gemini Killer. Rarely has Dourif been given the free reign to appear on screen as himself and deliver a truly scene chewing performance that displays his full range. Go to Full Review

Draco W Apr 1, 2019 Skip Exorcist 2 and go straight to this. This is more of a sequel to the original and it's actually really good. I don't understand the low rating. Then again, I don't understand the high rating of a bunch of movies... See more
Hagrid S Nov 17, 2018 William Peter Blatty The Exorcist III's has excellent dialogue, well paced, superb acting, solid character arcs and plot development mark this fine demonic horror/detective story. I feel George C. Scott's performance is as good as he has ever played in any of his previous films. Further back up by Brad Dourif magnetic monologue's . The atmosphere surrounding the film is one of foreboding , anticipation and ultimately the despair of satanism. May not have the visceral impact of the first film, but it gives viewers far more than they had any reason to expect. It would probably be much more highly-regarded were it not for the pedigree it has to live up to. Exorcist III stands alone, one of those rarest of birds: a horror sequel with ideas of its own. Abraham S Nov 7, 2018 I'm actually very surprised at the score this movie received. The Exorcist III is a sequel that takes the lure and context of the original but creates a completely different story and different overall idea with the film playing more like a psychological thriller than a horror. I love it. It hasn't very off putting direction with its inductive approach to a lot of scenes to make you feel uneasy with its main character. And speaking of that main character, he is, as far as I'm concerned, the perfect protagonist for this type of movie. He's damaged and so out of his element with the sinister events going on and it makes for an incredibly interesting journey to see his character grow. The film does get a little messy with what it wants to focus on at times and the introduction in the third act to the possession subplot does feel out of left field a bit but I still think this movie is so much better than a third exorcist film has any right to be and is probably one of the most underrated sequels of all time. Kylo W Oct 15, 2018 Although I liked the storyline with Fr. Karas, this movie had a lot of build up with a weak ending. At some points the scares seemed rushed or kind of an afterthought because the movie spent more time talking about scary things and less time showing them. I love a good build up in a movie but with this the payoff was a let down - especially when you consider what the original Exorcist had to offer See more
Theodore L Sep 14, 2018 Exorcist III is what I see as suspenseful, sneaky, but not entirely smart.
Harry R Mar 18, 2018 William Peter Beatty may be a certified lunatic, but he's a fine director, and The Exorcist III reinstates that with an abundance of scares, gruesome imagery, and moments of disturbing revelation. See more
