Mia (Jane Levy), a drug addict, is determined to kick the habit. To that end, she asks her brother, David (Shiloh Fernandez), his girlfriend, Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and their friends Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) to accompany her to their family's remote forest cabin to help her through withdrawal. Eric finds a mysterious Book of the Dead at the cabin and reads aloud from it, awakening an ancient demon. All hell breaks loose when the malevolent entity possesses Mia.

Critics Consensus

It may lack the absurd humor that underlined the original, but the new-look Evil Dead compensates with brutal terror, gory scares, and gleefully bloody violence.

The current reboot feels uncreative. Watching the new film just made me miss Bruce Campbell's chin and shots of Raimi running insane through the woods.

Using the very latest Cern-tested atom interferometry, we can reveal that Evil Dead is precisely, exactly - in the coldest atomic terms -the film that you were expecting.

Happy days for those who love this sort of thing. But Raimi's effort, perhaps because we hadn't seen the plot before, was infinitely more scary.

... barely musters interest because it fails to do anything remarkable with the opportunity. It borrows on nostalgia by gathering similar characters at a familiar location wherein unsightly, horrible things happen to them, yet pushes things not at all.

Fede Alvarez, has a rare misfire as he makes changes and retains elements that are not faithful to the spirit of the original and prioritizes surprises over relatable character development and dynamics.

I'm watching it right now! I can't stop running facetious commentary to makemyself laugh to keep from turning it off (oh no! those vines are going to come alive!). By the numbers horror for teen boys. Everything that happens, you know it's going to happen five seconds before it happens. I wonder if the #meetoo movement will ever proclaim enough is enough with the sexual overtones of the horror genre that's been going on forever. Scantily clad nubile young women being chased by mostly creepy, monstorous, older males through the woods, In EVIL DEAD when the slimy, crawling vine (it's alive!) slithers up the girl's birth canal under her short dress just might be the most pseudo erotic scene ever in mainstream horror. LOL!
