What to Know

Critics Consensus

Big on special effects but short on laughs, Evan Almighty underutilizes a star-studded cast that includes Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman.

Evan Almighty is an ungainly melding of religious paean, big-budget studio comedy, feel-good family niceties and summer-blockbuster spectacle. Go to Full Review

But most of these faults are due to the film’s commitment to the philosophical bit. Also, they named the Noah-character’s wife “Joan” (Lauren Graham) because her husband is building an ark. Go to Full Review

Feb 8, 2019 I dont know what all the lash is about. Compared to many modern day films, this movie shares a special message about kindness, listening to Gods commandments to matter he odds, and adds a sense of humor, something many modern day films miss See more
Kylo R Jan 5, 2019 Bruce Almight was a laugh riot but this time the main star Carrey is missing and the effects are obvious. Not that Steve Carrell is a bad actor but the screenplay lets him down. The central problem with Evan Almighty is that the filmmakers pack too much plot into what should be a relatively lightweight comedy. This results in too much exposition and too few laughs. Instead of developing a shell of a plot that allows star Steve Carell to take control with his low-key charisma and natural humor, it saddles him with a narrative so preposterous that not even he can vault the barrier. Evan Almighty is amusing in pieces but, taken as a whole, it offers little, and the morality lesson is galling. Still this is a good one time watch with some laughs to be had. (Not as good as Bruce Almighty). See more
Theodore R Dec 16, 2018 The script is a choke-full of cliches so big that I won't even bother listing them. The saving grace is of course the charismatic Steve Carell, along with a solid supporting cast (Wanda Sykes standing out as per usual) and a handful of good jokes. Unfortunately what prevails is the mumbo jumbo about religion and family and one is left with the impression that subtlety and originality are complete strangers to the makers of this film. See more
Albus P Nov 11, 2018 Good movie, very kid friendly.
Rey R Oct 5, 2018 Not nearly as funny as Bruce Almighty, but also not nearly as crass. I think this was made to be more of a family film than a comedy. Yes, its screenwriting isn't very good, and it's pretty outrageous and preposterous, but ultimately I find it tough to dislike because it does have a pretty good message. In my opinion it's a good film for the young ones to enjoy with their family without teaching them anything rude, crude, or crass like most modern movies. It's nice to see the return of a movie with a clear moral. See more
Rey P Aug 21, 2018 The jokes are OK at best, acting and casting are solid. Plot is wacky and ultimately not too interesting.
