Critics Consensus

Eraser's shoot-'em-up action might show off some cutting edge weaponry, but its rote story is embarrassingly obsolete.

Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal Jul 19, 2023
Tree trunk he may be, but Mr. Schwarzenegger has grown new branches with green leaves in this smart action thriller, directed with panache by Charles Russell and written crisply by Tony Puryear and Walon Green. Go to Full Review

A few of the set pieces are fussy or overly extended, but the rest is tolerable bone-crunching diversion. Go to Full Review

The stunts, even show-stopping ones such as our man throwing himself out of a plane without a parachute and landing on a car without sustaining injury, have an air of desperation about them. Go to Full Review

The one-liners don't have the usual invigorating snarl, and, for all the action, this one feels a little tired. Go to Full Review

Even though Eraser has to contend with a pencil-thin (ouch) plot, it still functions as a modestly entertaining vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger. Go to Full Review

Eraser remains a generic but entertaining Schwarzenegger action film elevated by its cast and old-school 1990s spectacle. Go to Full Review

Han M Apr 4, 2019 John Kruger (Arnold Schwarzenegger) - a top U.S. Marshal for the Witness Security Protection Program (WITSEC) - specializes in "erasing" high-profile witnesses: faking their deaths to protect them from anyone that might silence them. After erasing mob witness Johnny Casteleone (Robert Pastorelli), Kruger is given a new assignment by his boss, Chief Arthur Beller (James Coburn), to protect Lee Cullen (Vanessa Williams), a senior executive at Cyrez Corporation, a defense contractor. Lee warned the FBI that top-level Cyrez executives covered up the creation of a top secret electromagnetic pulse rifle and plan to sell the weapon on the black market. In an FBI sting operation, Lee accesses the Cyrez mainframe and downloads data on the EM rifle onto two discs: one for the FBI and one for her own protection. Vice President William Donohue, her boss, detects Lee's intrusion and orders her into his office. After finding Lee's hidden camera and threatening her with a pistol, Donohue commits suicide in front of her. Lee delivers the disc to the FBI but, disillusioned by their broken promise to guarantee her safety, she refuses Kruger's protection offer... Roger Ebert, gave the film 3 stars out of a possible 4. He wrote that there were so many plot holes that "it helps to have a short attention span", but that Eraser is nonetheless "actually good action fun, with spectacular stunts and special effects" and a spirited performance from Williams "running and jumping and fighting and shooting and kicking and screaming and being tied to chairs and smuggling computer discs and looking great." By the time "Eraser" came out in 1996, Arnold Schwarzenegger had recently had one bomb on his CV, "Last Action Hero" (1993) and one hit "True Lies" (1994). So on one hand his career had become a bit unstable at that point, but yet "Eraser" was a commercial success, grossing over $242 million against a budget of $100 million. The fact is that this film is simply average and not a classic Arnold film in my eyes. The plot is nothing really special (and there´s plenty of plot holes) while the "rail-gun" seen in the film carries a somewhat intriguing concept. The effects and CGI are wobbly and not up to scratch even for being 1996. The main cast is not bad with Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Caan, James Coburn and lovely Vanessa Williams, but everything ends up in a mish mash of ridiculous action sequences where Arnold can play out his macho persona and yet he is not that convincing as John Kruger. In my book "Eraser" marked the beginning of the end of Arnolds golden action hero years. See more

Abraham M Jan 8, 2018 I saw this movie when it came out and had a great time. It is just an action movie plain and simple. A great supporting cast and one of Arnie's better movies post True Lies. See more
