Critics Consensus

The Equalizer 2 delivers the visceral charge of a standard vigilante thriller, but this reunion of trusted talents ultimately proves a disappointing case study in diminishing returns.

Fuqua's direction is slick but generally uninspired.

Washington is a pleasure to watch on the screen. The two-time Oscar winner is able to tap into his own surplus of moral righteousness even when the script is pulling the carpet out from under him.

It's often cheesy and it's not deep, despite repeated cameos for a copy of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, but it is, appropriately enough, the equal of The Equalizer.

Some may find the ending acceptable but unfortunately it hurt the film considerably for me.

It falters when it comes to action, especially during a climax that takes place in the middle of a storm, and where the violence becomes murky and hard to enjoy. “The Equalizer 2” never reaches the same level as its predecessor. Full review in Spanish.

Denzel is always immensely watchable and the hurricane-set finale is packed with suspense, but overall the movie is dampened by an unfocused and predictable plot.

Boring, not as good as the first one! The plot was very slow and very predictable. Sadly I was very disappointed and am looking forward to Equaliser 3, which I hope will have a faster pace, more action etc like the first movie.

Denzel still got it. My aunt and I were very much entertained by the standard story and strong lead, McCall as portrayed by Denzel.

Very average action thriller. Nothing memorable besides Denzel and the kid who wants to paint buildings.
