What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though its narrative themes are all too familiar, Epic is beautifully animated and crafted with just enough flair to make for solid family entertainment.

Produces images of poetic power ... The catch is that the world the filmmakers create is far more interesting than the story they tell in it in it or the characters they put in it. Go to Full Review

Only the very young will draw much from the generic storytelling, while the handsome animation of the natural world is wasted on dull characters and unexciting situations. Go to Full Review

Knowing the state of the animation industry, and how artists and animators put their hearts and souls into their craft, hoping to create something truly special, makes this end result very disappointing indeed. Go to Full Review

Anakin S Apr 22, 2019 Bad jokes and full of clichà (C)s
Draco S Jan 16, 2019 Good animation and interesting world. Potentially good story but very underdeveloped.
Jan 4, 2019 Struggles with some shallow story ideas as part of the overall plot arc, but has such high production values, casting, and art to make it really good. Some of the characters and archetypes are very 1-D, but it is so gorgeous you might not even notice. First part was a little rushed. Kinda refreshingly old-school GOOD/EVIL, PRINCE CHARMING/PRINCESS, NATURE/HUMANS thing going on. The animals and citizens of the forest were superbly crafted. The rot kingdom, characters, and their costumes were particularly inspired. Title of the movie is a little bit of a MISS and vague. See more
Han S Nov 11, 2018 It's hard for me to describe what it is about this film that has made it my #1 disliked movie of all time. I actually watch a lot of kid "family friendly" films and I tend to enjoy them, and even though this film had an awful title ("Epic" clearly used in the modern sense instead of the traditional writing sense) I've got a soft spot for fairies and elves so I wanted to give it a try anyway. Oh gods. Oh gods no, whyyyyyyyyyy. But let me get into it. First, you meet your protagonist. She's the typical "daddy issues" girl with the wacky inventor dad (such an overdone trope). She's ...not awful, I guess. I can at least say that about her when I can't say it about many other characters in this film. She shrinks through typical plot schenanigans and you meet the elf-people complete with ex boy-band member "obvious love interest who has no other role in this film" dude. He and the protagonist initially dislike each other, of course (because we don't have enough tired old tropes in this film), but I care so little about either of them that I don't really mind if they end up together or not. Anyway--the only truly interesting characters were the captain guy and the queen (and they KILLED THE QUEEN OFF like 3 minutes after introducing her ...spoilers, by the way). But we can't spend time with them, nope, instead we spend the majority of the film stuck with bland trope 1 and 2, occasionally being interrupted by the most AWFUL side characters I've yet to see in a family film. Villain? Completely forgettable. I literally don't remember who it was. Tagalong slugs? Annoying. But what is easily the worst moment in the entire film is when it decides about 3/4ths of the way through that it suddenly wants to be a musical and you have to sit through an AWFUL song that has no relevance to anything at all. It's truly one of the worst family film songs I've ever had to sit through. Well, it was either that song as the worst moment or the reveal that the annoying child flower we saw for 2 seconds is the new queen. That CERTAINLY must have felt like a justifyiable payoff for this whole entire "epic" journey, right? (Sigh). Sorry for getting more heated than usual in this review, here. But this was the first family film I've ever seen in theaters that made me wish I could demand my money back. I didn't enjoy it one bit, and I left the theater angry. See more
Kylo W Nov 5, 2018 Although the characters and story are not the best, Epic is still a must see purely for the visuals.
Albus R Aug 10, 2018 I like this one, and that's all I have to say.
