What to Know

Critics Consensus

Atmospheric and thrilling, Enemy at the Gates gets the look and feel of war right. However, the love story seems out of place.

Tense and violent WWII movie. Go to Full Review

There's never much risk of reality intruding--just a lot of histrionic James Horner music nd plenty of designer stubble on the soldiers' faces. Go to Full Review

Set-pieces get you so far (and Annaud delights in blowing this set to pieces), but the script's shortcomings aren't camouflaged by the decision to adopt Home Counties' accents as the film's lingua franca. Go to Full Review

A terrific subject for a major motion picture — the Battle of Stalingrad, the bloodbath during which the conquering German army suffered one of its first major setbacks of World War II — receives only half-hearted treatment in this handsome production. Go to Full Review

Without its ambitious underpinnings, these virtuoso set pieces wouldn't flicker with emotion. In Enemy at the Gates, gravity has entertainment value, at least to those who can respond to wartime fervor. Go to Full Review

Time and time again, Enemy at the Gates squanders its pulse-pounding momentum on long, high-falutin' stretches of pointy-headed pretentiousness that just get in the road of the good stuff. Go to Full Review

Mar 1, 2019 The sniper scenes are great. The love triangle not so much.
Poe W Feb 28, 2019 Canï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)t believe this film rated so lowly with critics. Love the film. Iï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)ve seen it multiple times and it never gets old. Great sets, acting, music is outstanding (sounds sort of like Glory). The dialogue near the end about inequality even in a communist country is writing at itï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)s finest. The opening is extremely violent but seems historically accurate. So a love element was thrown in? So what? That tied the story together with the dialogue and character motive at the end. I didnï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)t realize this was supposed to be a historical documentary. Have on dvd but will likely buy Blu-ray. See more
Theodore M Feb 7, 2019 gripping and intense movie great action scenes fantastic acting, but some characters felt a bit too cliche overall storyline was good could have done better in terms of historical accuracy, but still a good movie to watch See more
Luke W Dec 14, 2018 Death, propaganda, mud, terror. That is all this movie needs, and if not for the out-of-nowhere romance than it wouldâ(TM)ve reached great levels of war immersion. See more

Harry S Apr 7, 2018 Ah, Stalingrad, Hitler's greatest folly. This film certainly has its moments but it feels slighter than other WWII films and the romance angle is certainly overplayed. It is still moving and effective in places but there are more worthwhile films out there that depict the true horrors of war. See more
