What to Know

Critics Consensus

Made on a shoestring budget, El Mariachi's story is not new. However, the movie has so much energy that it's thoroughly enjoyable.

By turns hilarious, soulful, gritty and sexy, this lively crime drama was created by 23-year-old director Robert Rodriguez of Austin, Texas, for a budget of 7,000. Go to Full Review

El Mariachi makes the bloated movies of Steven Seagal and other American martial arts stars look as lazy and cluttered as the tag-team match at a tanktown wrestling arena. This movie means business. Go to Full Review
Jay Carr Boston Globe Sep 9, 2021
Although crude, it deftly balances kinetic action sequences with hip awareness, only occasionally succumbing to moves that seem self-conscious or affected. Go to Full Review

This $7,000 film is one that shows what passion and talent can do and how to bring a story to the screen properly with the right folks involved. Go to Full Review

Some of the film is monotonous, but it’s so completely what it is — a shoot-’em-up done with throwaway energy — that you’d have to be fun-impaired not to enjoy it. Go to Full Review

Draco L Apr 25, 2019 With a nearly little to no budget, El Mariachi is a pretty entertaining action movie with stylish direction by rookie director Robert Rodriguez and some decent action sequences. See more
Albus R Mar 28, 2019 So simplist, and so entertaining
Draco M Mar 4, 2019 Believing in a project with $7,000 can go a really long way. This was a surprise of a action film from a first time director. The storyline and action sequences really defines this movie and is brilliant on every level. See more
Jan 26, 2019 The best thrilling movie ever made!
Albus P Nov 5, 2018 It's not entirely true what they say about first impressions. Not only are they anything but "everything," they also aren't always a good indication of what's to come. A lot of directorial debuts don't entirely telegraph the ensuing careers of their respective filmmakers. Christopher Nolan's "Following" is easily his weakest film -- and it's not even close. Clint Eastwood's "Play Misty For Me" doesn't even flick a booger in the direction of the kinds of heights his career would later transcend to. And I don't even think we need to talk about James Cameron's "Piranha II." I think you might know where I'm getting with this, but I feel a similar way about this first film from director Robert Rodriguez. Do I have to take into account that it was made on a shoestring budget? Yes, I do. But surprisingly, it's not the production values that bothered me. It's the personality -- or lack thereof -- that ultimately makes this movie as dull as it ends up being for me. A lot of characters with limited charisma, speaking in hushed, uninspired tones about some fairly contrived things. It's not a bad movie in any regard, but again, in no way does this signal the kind of filmmaker we'd eventually get from it. It is simply not the quintessential Robert Rodriguez film. See more
Ron W Dec 17, 2017 'El Mariachi' has a Mexican, 90's charm shot on a Spaghetti Western tone that's whimsical; it's a sheer, easy cinematic pleasure. It's just its one-dime plot and natural style, made by an unembarrassed young director who has never been so unembarrassed and artistically fresh than in its first, zero-budget action film. 'El Mariachi' is invention and entertainment- that is- is juicy scenes of creative violence which calls for the same kind of consumption than the consumption of a cold beer in a little town bar on a -Mexican-hot day. It's all about a man "who just wanted to be a Mariachi", sure, but it's also about a man who has become what he has been mistaken to, about a man who trades his guitar for guns, with the selfsame guitar case.
