After her controlling husband dies, an elderly woman embarks on a trip to fulfill her longtime dream of climbing a mountain in the Scottish Highlands.

Critics Consensus

Edie often reduces a remarkable story to a rather ordinary viewing experience, but it's elevated considerably by Sheila Hancock's work in the title role.

The growing friendship between Edie and Jonny has an understated but very genuine warmth.

Something tells me a documentary on Hancock simply navigating the rigors of "Edie," as well as acting it to the fullest, might have been more readily inspiring.

The story in "Edie" may get sidetracked from time to time, but Hancock never does, with a focus every bit the equal of her character's, if not more so.

The mountain serves as both a metaphor and a concrete goal, and Edie's determination to conquer it will strike a chord in anyone who's ever thought they might have missed their chance to do something big or meaningful.

A clumsy dramedy that doesn't discern the emotional gravity behind Edie's boiling impulse to take back her own life, let alone the precarious escapade she decides to embark on.

"[The] mawkish score milks the concept for every last drop of emotion, badgering you with the swelling airs of struggle and triumph - and marring what might have been a moving character study of a resilient survivor."

A simple, but powerful tale that sets out a story of hope at a gentle pace, after a life dutifully lived, beautifully filmed.
