Because of his eccentric habits and bafflingly strange films, director Ed Wood (Johnny Depp) is a Hollywood outcast. Nevertheless, with the help of the formerly famous Bela Lugosi and a devoted cast and crew of show-business misfits who believe in Ed's off-kilter vision, the filmmaker is able to bring his oversize dreams to cinematic life. Despite a lack of critical or commercial success, Ed and his friends manage to create an oddly endearing series of extremely low-budget films.

The sweet center of the movie is Wood's resurrection of horror actor Bela Lugosi, a despairing drug addict who is played brilliantly by Martin Landau. Go to Full Review

Ed Wood doesn’t really give us the inside of Wood’s head, but it does treat imaginatively a number of Wood movies that retain a certain fascination ... Go to Full Review

... Tim Burton’s loving film biography... is perhaps the most loving portrait of a filmmaker ever put on screen. Go to Full Review

It champions the power of, and passion for, filmmaking by exploring it through the eyes of one of the worst filmmakers to have ever made a motion picture. Burton uses some truly terrible films to inspire what may be his best work. Go to Full Review

While Ed Wood probably won't do the kind of business enjoyed by Edward Scissorhands, this deliciously bizarre bio-pic should instantly become a movie cultist's treasure. Go to Full Review

Luke W Feb 10, 2019 Tim Burton's style works well in a touching personal story about a hero in independent film making, quality of films be damned just follow your passion and take the good and the bad that comes with it. See more
Anakin L Jan 12, 2019 Aw. Ful. Awful. Terrible. Save yourself and don't waste any of your life watching this thing. I saw this in college with a Studio rep in a preview audience. I believe I liked Martin Landau but this might be the worst movie ever made. Certainly, by a long shot, the worst movie I ever suffered through in a theater. I can't recall, but I've walked out of the theater once or twice. I was sort of obligated to sit through this one however. See more
Anakin W Nov 10, 2018 I love it that this movie is in Black and White. Johnny makes a cute woman.
Theodore W Oct 27, 2018 Johnny Depp shines as Ed Wood. It is pertinent, the performances are amazing, the story is enlightning and entertaining, the photography is at the point and the dialogues are intriguing. Better than I expected. See more
Han G Sep 29, 2018 Personally, I found myself liking "Ed Woods". It wasn't my favorite film, nor was it one that I would watch again but it was easy to watch and mostly enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed Johnny Depp and Sarah Jessica Parker's performances. Johnny Depp always adds different affectations to his characters that I appreciate, and this role proved to be a very different one than what we are used to seeing for Sarah Jessica Parker. I also enjoyed the "movie within a movie" aspect that it had. Being a part of the film industry, I could certainly relate to the struggles and difficulties that Ed faced getting his films financed and seen. I found myself really rooting for him and rooting for his success. There was also another aspect to the film that I empathized with which was that at the end of the day Ed just wanted to be loved and accepted for who he was, which was something that he finally found with Kathy. I wouldn't necessarily say that the film felt to be a success. It certainly didn't feel to be a failure, but I didn't find it to necessarily be anything above and beyond in any particular way. I did enjoy that it was about an actual filmmaker and found it to be disappointing to hear of how his career progressed beyond the timeline of the film. Despite his shortcomings, Ed Wood was determined to achieve his dreams and it proved to be sad that he failed so much that he got an award for "worst director". See more
Harry W Sep 4, 2018 Ed Wood is a fine collaboration between Johnny Depp who plays the titular character and the director Tim Burton. For those unaware Ed Wood was a film director in the 50s with a colorful personal life and a less than decent knack for directing. His films are often considered the worst ever though he genuinely thought he was making great movies. What shines through is Ed Wood's charisma and honesty and you can't help but like him. Johnny Depp as usual disappears into the role and he is ably supported by everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to Martin Landau. This is a great film to watch if you are a fan of Depp, Wood or just good old-fashioned storytelling. See more
