What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dragon Blade is beautifully staged and choreographed, but between the battles, its talented cast is overwhelmed by a dull story and choppy editing.

Handsome production design and sweeping battle vistas lend a touch of class, with Chan directing the action scenes with trademark brio. Go to Full Review

There are nice moments, but this is pure bombast, and Chan's natural action flair is not given free rein. Go to Full Review

For those who ever wondered what it would be like to see John Cusack and Jackie Chan engage in a swordfight (both of you), here is "Dragon Blade." Go to Full Review

...it would be misleading (if gracious) to focus only on Dragon Blade's handful of redeeming aspects. In total, it's a ridiculous drag of a movie... Go to Full Review

The narrative is notably bizarre, with a smorgasbord of never-ending tribulations and lingering speeches - however, brush that aside for a film that relies on the spirit and merits of its actors and crew. Go to Full Review

Abraham S Mar 2, 2019 With editing as sloppy, dialogue as vapid, and performances (by the white cast) as lazy as whatever historical research went into this chauvinist Chinese chimera, the movie is endearingly dumb thanks to the always charming work of the only real legend on display here, the irreplaceable Jackie Chan. Leia R Dec 15, 2018 I actually like this film. Yes, it had flaws and maybe it was not entirely accurate historically.... but the parts that were good were good enough for me to shrug off the rest. I loved the richness of the costuming, the epic sets, amazing choreography, and production values, JC Stunts created amazing fight scenes - as usual - and I very much enjoyed Jackie Chan's turn towards drama. Nicely done. But there was an odd rhythm to the flow, especially the oddly placed flashbacks, and the editing was unsettlingly at times. Wondered if that was just an Asian preference. I mean, it did earn nearly $120million in China, so it was well liked outside of the USA. The little boy - ugh - he was irritating but not in it very long. Cusak and Brody were, um, unexpected casting choices. Not really at the top of their game here, though they both had moments. Some people disliked the message of "turn foe to friend" in the film, but based on interviews with Chan in the past few years this seems to be his personal goal. Was a little preachy and unexpected from a team of fighters - but not enough for me to stop watching. Overall, Chan's acting, the stunts, and epic staging and costuming kept me watching. Hey - Chan's earlier movies were a LOT cheesier and people still watched those! See more
Han P Sep 8, 2018 The first Jackie Chan movie I consider bad. Sad but he had a great run. John Cusack's performance reminded me of when Nicolas Cage's movies deteriorated. The dialog was preachy and acting subpar. Watch this if you want to share in the misery. See more
Jun 17, 2018 I just now saw the film and stopped midway. There's some scenes that had good camera angles but the editing was horrible. Slow motion was very cheesy. Two cultures showing off their skills was not necessary. They had the children crying "annoyingly" to play on the viewer's hearts. See more
Jun 6, 2018 This is the first film I'm reviewing in my 24 years of life on this planet. The sole reason why is so as to save at least one person from making the horrible horrible mistake I made of watching this festering mess of a film. It took me a month to finish it, I kept stopping it and returning (cause mama ain't raise no quitter) but I needed the breaks so my brain could recover from watching the absolute bullshit my eyeballs were subject to. The best way to put this is that my senses were assaulted with the worst film in centuries. The set pieces were cringe worthy, the dialogue was a steaming pile of excrement and I never thought I'd see with mine own two eyes a film with worse dialogue than fifty shades of grey AND twilight combined. That alone earns this film the unique distinction of being the smelliest most prestigious turd, distinguished in its position as the finest of the worst. This film was directed by an illiterate toddler, I am convinced of that. And Mr potato head from toy story wrote the action sequences. You know when 2 year olds play with their toys and stage elaborate fights and stories? Yeah, this is what happens when you give that toddler an expensive camera and £60m to make their story come to life. But then again I've heard better stories from babies farts than this film. The acting is the last thing I'll comment on, it's so bad that if I was an extra in the film, I wouldn't accept payment in cash, I would ask them to delete my face and name from the film in its entirety as payment. How Adrien Brody, John Cusack and Jackie Chan wilfully chose to appear in this film is anyone's guess. Did they think it'll never be seen? Or would it only be screened in the ISS? I dunno. To the director, screen writers and everyone attached to the creation of this cancerous bilge of a film, I hope you all get stung by hornets on the daily and stubs your little toes on sharp angles nightly for the rest of your lives. May your homes always be cold af and your heating break down in the depths of winter. Pretty sure the people rating it more than 2 stars are paid russian trolls trying to make life even more miserable for us westerners. I wish I could give this film 0.1 stars but I can't. See more
Draco S Apr 13, 2018 The evil Tiberius wants it all and plot murders and betrayals. However, even ennemy armies can love and conquer to end in peace. Amen. Very epically thought and produced. Some flaws in the connection between scenes are confusing but the whole is worth some time. See more
