It's 1962, and feminist Barbara Novak (Renée Zellweger) pens a best-selling book that details the drawbacks of love. She encourages women to forgo serious relationships with men in favor of independence, workplace achievements and satisfying sex. Despite her success, many men are taken aback by her progressive views, including slick writer Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor), who decides to expose Barbara as a fraud by making her fall in love with him. However, his plan has unexpected consequences.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Looks great, but Zellweger and McGregor have no chemistry together, and the self-satisfied, knowing tone grates.

If only the script was better this would be one of the great pleasures of the summer. Unfortunately, as it is onscreen, it's only a great missed opportunity. What a shame. Go to Full Review

Draco R Feb 6, 2018 Charming and naive old style movie.
Finn R Feb 1, 2018 What a fun movie! I loved it right off. It looks so authentic that when my mother saw it she at first thought it was a movie from the 60's. I absolutely love the outfits. And the verbal banter is fast and sassy just like the old movies. Its a fun blast from the past! See more
Kylo R Nov 30, 2017 Fun. Amusing. Full of sexual jokes that aren't over the top or disgusting.
Rey W Aug 16, 2017 Really like this flick, since I grew up on this type of 1960s rom-com, since my mom just loved them. Everything about this movie was so very true to form--the story, the music, the costumes and hairstyles, even the opening credits. The script was wonderfully well done, too, as were the split screens that were hilarious for their "dual action" in a way that no 60s film could have gotten away with back then. Whether it was meant to be or not, the casting of Sarah Paulson and David Hyde-Pierce as "lovers" was amusing as well, but only in hindsight and both seemed to enjoy playing the parts, too. Really funny and enjoyable! See more
Hagrid R May 24, 2017 I thought it was lots of fun, purposely dorky and totally making fun of the romance movies of the 60's. Music and clothes are fabulous, good girls night movie. See more
George S Mar 27, 2017 You know how the movie is going to end almost immediately. They could've cut an hour off the runtime because this movie will make you groan and make you hope for the end but it keeps going and going. See more
