Graceful, enigmatic, and often frightening, Dogtooth is an ingenious dark comedy that won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award® nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, propelling Oscar® winner Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things, The Favourite) to the forefront of contemporary cinema's most ambitious young filmmakers. In an effort to protect their three children from the corrupting influence of the outside world, a Greek couple transforms their home into a gated compound of cultural deprivation and strict rules of behavior. But children cannot remain innocent forever. When the father brings home a young woman to satisfy his son's sexual urges, the family's engineered "reality" begins to crumble, with devastating consequences. Like the haunting, dystopic visions of Michael Haneke and Gaspar Noé, Dogtooth punctuates its compelling drama with moments of shocking violence, creating a biting social satire that is as profound as it is provocative.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It'll be too disturbing -- and meandering -- for some, but Dogtooth is as disturbing and startlingly original as modern filmmaking gets.

A disquieting film about family, all-consuming delusion and eventual violence, it’s Lanthimos at his best, most unflinching. Go to Full Review

To put it mildly, "Dogtooth" is not for everyone, but it can grow on you even if you think you've rejected its influence. Go to Full Review

This is the second feature for Lanthimos, and it's a leap from his well-received debut Kinetta. He skilfully doles out tantalizing pieces of information, keeping the viewer in a constant state of suspense and wonder. Go to Full Review

Yet, as absurdist, enigmatic and dark as Dogtooth gets, it’s mild in comparison to his recent work. But it still provides quite the palpably biting sting. Go to Full Review

This is lo-fi unhinged Lanthimos, but like all his movies, Dogtooth exists somewhere between allegory and comedic exaggeration. Go to Full Review

Draco S Apr 4, 2019 Arduous nonsense. The movie seems to be an poor excuse to exhibit incest.
George G Mar 9, 2019 I was very very uncomfortable... Nice.
Han S Feb 12, 2019 Almost going backwards here, watched the Lobster and Killing of A Sacred Deer already, and now I'm on this, this is probably the most uncomfortable of Yorgas's films.. imagine that! There's almost just 5 characters in the entire film, all within the same family. And, like all of his films, there's something definitely off-kilter about their universe. Seemingly isolated in their own house (even though it does look like they're in the city and quite well off), the kids and mother go about their bizarre little routines like it was the norm, and the father, in no ways a big man, still has a stern control over how family life should go, no matter how bizarre it may be. Very very odd. See more
Rey G Jan 11, 2019 A favourite ,beautiful and twisted.
