What to Know

Critics Consensus

Provocative and audacious, Dogma is an uneven but thoughtful religious satire that's both respectful and irreverent.

What makes Dogma unique is that it’s Smith’s voice attempting to know the mind of God. Go to Full Review

A very vulgar pro-faith comedy rather than a sacrilegious goof, Dogma is an extraordinarily uneven film that significant cutting might be able to transform into a playable one. Go to Full Review

I couldn't care less whether Smith's metaphysical conceits about the war between Good and Evil are those of a devout believer or an atheist. The bottom line is that they're puerile. Go to Full Review

Dogma criticizes all religious sects of Western society, from Catholics to Protestants to Agnostics. Whether you’re a believer, denier, or contrarian, Smith has more than a few words for you. Go to Full Review

Boasting an impressive cast of A-list actors and respected performers, Kevin Smith’s cult classic Dogma is a strange, juvenile, and surprisingly intelligent spoof of the Catholic religion. Go to Full Review

Some might argue that Dogma lacks the polish of other films in Smith’s filmography — again, criticisms of its more juvenile humor are common. I would counter that it only adds to the film’s humanity. The divine can withstand a little humor and simplicity. Go to Full Review

Hagrid S Mar 16, 2019 A very funny religious satire that pokes fun at religion and yet also respects religion as well. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck do well in the comedy and I wish they would do another Kevin Smith film soon because I enjoyed seeing Ben Affleck in Mallrats as well. See more
Draco S Nov 25, 2018 "Buddy Jesus" isn't as good as "Fig Jesus"
Finn M Nov 16, 2018 I haven't seen it in almost 20 years and it's still as fresh as once it came out. Well almost. Linda Fiorenting plays our heroin the many times great grand niece of Jesus Christ and must prevent our bad angels from getting home. Easier said than done one would think. Its fun, fast and easily able to get got up in.With at the time when the Catholic church had no tolerance for such blasphemy or language. Watch it and enjoy it's great for an easy watch See more
Harry P Sep 10, 2018 Great cast, great writing and a lot of good views on christian beliefs. While its easy to just focus on the antics of Jay and Silent bob, the main cast pulls off great dialogue that makes the viewer re-watch different scenes See more
Han S Aug 30, 2018 Dogma is again Kevin Smith at his wittiest. This film will probably offend the theist but it's quite funny when it should be and doesn't hold back. In fact the ending is almost borderline crazy. Featuring a host of cameos as expected in Smith's films Dogma is a ripe comedy from the last months of the 90s. If you like comedy films which hold no punches then Dogma should be on your watch list. See more
