Tris Prior lives in a futuristic world in which society is divided into five factions. As each person enters adulthood, he or she must choose a faction and commit to it for life. Tris chooses Dauntless -- those who pursue bravery above all else. However, her initiation leads to the discovery that she is a Divergent and will never be able to fit into just one faction. Warned that she must conceal her status, Tris uncovers a looming war which threatens everyone she loves.

Critics Consensus

With an adherence to YA formula that undercuts its individualistic message, Divergent opens its planned trilogy in disappointingly predictable fashion.

The film is more interesting than the average bad movie precisely because it so gratuitously, and even thematically, fails to fit together.

This is a rite-of-passage film, with action, romance and self-realization woven in. But unlike some others of this genre, Divergent is thought-provoking teen sci-fi.

Never works on the characters and half the time they're killed off without you remembering their names, should please readers of the original series though

I wish the movies were more like the books. Veronica Roth was very descriptive and creative, but the producer for the movies lost some of the creativity when making the movies. Other than that, the movies were O.K.
