Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth -- not to conquer or give aid, but -- to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent (Sharlto Copley) contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination, and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic.

I don't know guys, at the end of the day it's aliens and hard for me to take this seriously. Go to Full Review

The wonder is that despite its obvious roots, District 9 feels staggeringly original. Go to Full Review

Blomkamp is good at mustering speedy action and posting grisly sight gags in the background, carnage always hovering comically at the edge of your vision. But I'm not sure that District 9 entirely gets the earthling racism out of its own system. Go to Full Review

Easily, one of the most original and exciting science fiction films of the last 20 years. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Blomkamp doesn’t miss a step. His film is cynical, funny, smart, exciting, and satirical—all without losing his audience’s involvement in the scenario. Go to Full Review

District 9 might not be a classic like Alien or ‘The Terminator’ (not many films are), but it’s still an effective sci-fi film with depth and style. Go to Full Review

Abraham S Apr 21, 2019 I wound up really liking this movie. First, I liked the different take on the alien story (as compared to all the times we see them invade us). Secondly, with a mix of different styles (part found footage, part action, part satire....) this movie could have been very messy but it was pulled together very well for a great story and a great performance from Sharlto Copley really helped elevate this movie. Abraham S Apr 7, 2019 An interesting take on alien invasion. As in, aliens come to Earth as refugees, not terrorists. It follows a man who works for the government and tries to transfer the creatures to a new district. Poverty is heavily messaged in this and they do it in a good way and makes you think, along with how we treat the lower class. Now, it started as "found footage" but then transitions to a cinematic theme, which I didn't prefer, but it was still well-executed. The main character did a good job, I felt bad for him for the stuff that came upon him. However, the movie does escalate really fast. I actually had to think for a second on what happened, but I was still very interested on what unfolded. There is a fair number of gun fights which really spiced up this Sci-Fi, very bloody and fast which I like. Now, I do recommend this movie not because it's action, but it's a unique way of explaining a fake story based on real life problems. A solid movie indeed. See more
Finn S Mar 22, 2019 excellent scify movie that proves it does not always take a big budget to prude a great movie.
Albus W Mar 19, 2019 District 9 suffers from too much inconsistency for me, particularly in the style of filming, and how humanity acts to finding aliens seems very unrealistic which seems to be ignored due to trying to get a commendable but basic political message. See more
Rey S Mar 17, 2019 It may have an obvious prejudice message, but it comes up with a surprisingly original sci-fi story to compensate it. The directing is very sharp by Neill Blomkamp, the action is very stylized and neat, and it comes with a gripping narrative that ends in strong ambiguity. The end result is something that is extremely entertaining, and I highly recommend watching it. See more
