A chambermaid (Léa Seydoux) from Paris relocates to a remote household in Provence in the late 19th century, engages in trysts and finds herself enraptured with a coach driver (Vincent Lindon).

Critics Consensus

It's hard to surpass Buñuel's treatment of Diary of a Chambermaid, but Léa Seydoux infuses Benoît Jacquot's stark adaptation with her captivating ferocity, delivering a thought-provoking film that runs out of steam towards its denouement.

Worth seeing as another entry in the rise of Léa Seydoux, a star of Gallic charisma if ever I've seen one.
