Dial M for Murder

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dial M for Murder may be slightly off-peak Hitchcock, but by any other standard, it's a sophisticated, chillingly sinister thriller -- and one that boasts an unforgettable performance from Grace Kelly to boot.

Ray Milland is sufficiently suave as the misbegotten genius, and Hitchcock has moved about very sure-footedlv on what continues to be for the most part just a stage. Go to Full Review

Ray Milland is great as cold fish Tony Wendice, a former tennis pro who plans to bump off his adulterous wife. Still, Grace Kelly is mis-cast (or misdirected) as the spouse in question. Go to Full Review

The set-up is ingenious and the "kill" scene genuinely thrilling. Go to Full Review

Dial M for Murder is often dismissed as lesser Hitchcock, yet its intricate plot and sterling performances thrill me every time I watch it. Go to Full Review

Dial M for Murder is never short of suspense and the master of suspense's first of three films with Grace Kelly is among the top tier of Hitchcock's filmography. Go to Full Review

The story never trips over itself and Hitchcock let’s Knott’s script do most of the heavy lifting. Go to Full Review

Finn P Feb 26, 2019 Sotisphicated and dramtically thriller...actually it's a dramtic case that i have a better appreciation on hitchcock
Jan 31, 2019 The best thrilling mystery movie ever made! With the best movie character ever portrayed: Ray Milland as Tony Wendice! And the best movie score ever composed! See more
Luke S Jan 28, 2019 Fantastic movie with a great score and excellent plot that draws you in.
Leia R Dec 29, 2018 Not quite what I was expecting here, sorta on the same level as Vertigo a bit and maybe Rear Window to a small extent. It's basically a murder set-up that goes slightly wrong and it comes down to the detective and the friend proving who did it. It's not bad, but it has an extremely slow start. See more
Theodore W Nov 20, 2018 Less fluid and free visually than Hitchcock's usual due to unwieldy 3D cameras but still innovative in use of the 3D and still brilliantly directed. Grace Kelly is perfection and the clever, witty script and performances added to the gripping scenes and suspense make this another Hitch classic. See more
Abraham R Nov 10, 2018 Dial M for Murder: 8 out of 10: A one room how to do it (There is no mystery on the whodunnit front) directed by the man himself Alfred Hitchcock and starring Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, and Robert Cummings as the murdering husband, the victim wife and the adulterous lover respectfully. This is a very cheap film. With the exception of a men's club scene that is easily skippable, the entire enterprise takes place in one apartment with about six people. There are no car chases or explosions. not even a gunshot. I bring this up because of a pet peeve of mine. I constantly hear the excuse that the movie wasn't good because of the budget. The ye olde they did what they could with what they had. What they, of course, should say is our scriptwriter and actors lack talent what do you expect. Nobody wants to say that so he or she blame the budget. What could you expect for so little money? Literally, you could perform this entire film in your own living room. Now in all fairness to all those aspiring Hitchcocks out there, most of you don't have a successful stage play as a starting point neither do you have a Grace Kelly or Ray Milland among your group of friends. (You probably have at least one Robert Cummings). That really does make a difference in a one-room play to screen adaptation (See Glengarry Glen Ross when it comes to stacking the acting deck). The story is nice and tight and expertly told. Ray Milland s perfect as the genial murderer while Grace Kelly really is a stunning beauty in this one. To the point one really has to wonder about Ray Milland's plan. A fun movie that holds up extremely well. See more
