When a woman and her son mysteriously vanish, FBI agent Daria Francis is dispatched to the small town of Devil's Gate, N.D., to investigate the primary suspect: religious fanatic Jackson Pritchard, husband and father of the missing persons. But when Francis and local deputy Colt arrive at Pritchard's foreboding property, they discover much more than they bargained for lurking in the basement.

Though the FX and photography are competent for a film of this scale, the screenwriters appear to have put much less effort into dialogue and pacing.

I really dug the first two-thirds of director and co-writer Clay Staub's Devil's Gate, the initial setup and the kinetically enthralling second act bolting me forward in my seat...

In a cardinal sin of genre filmmaking, [Clay] Staub also lets his audience figure out the twists before his characters do, all while he overexplains the plot

Character driven, creepy and loaded with legitimately puzzling twists and turns, it's one of the strongest offerings in its sub-genre in years.

Devil's Gate beams into its story with reckless abandon, but advances far quicker than audiences keep up with. At least there are some cool Javier Botet aliens, though?

It simply rehashes a plotline we've seen many times before but doesn't add anything of value to it.

Started off kinda promising. Milo is bomb - but the combination of actually seeing these 'angels' and then the weird underdeveloped back story just fell flat towards the end. CG wasn't so great either

The horror movie that almost was. Great acting all around couldn't help this story one bit. Every word of dialogue seemed to come from other movies I've seen in the past. Character motivations also felt like déjà vu, as if the movie was using well established recipes. It just didn't work and ended up being a sequence of well executed special effects devoid of human emotions. I couldn't even care for the child which is a bad indication of failure in story telling.

The most interesting part of this movie was my enthusiasm to see just how bad it would actually get. A middling premise and weak character that couldn't be ressurcted by an otherwise decent cast. Watch if you have absolutely nothing else to do!

The concept of the movie is interesting and the 1st half of the movie is solid, but unfortunately falls flat at the end.
