A disillusioned field surgeon who is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder makes a man out of body parts and brings him to life in a Brooklyn loft.

Critics Consensus

A thrillingly effective update on a classic story, Depraved jolts a familiar monster back to life with a potent blend of timely themes and old-school chills.

A tragedy as much as a horror film, Depraved is a contemporary love letter to Mary Shelly's legacy

At nearly two hours, Depraved can feel a little long in the tooth... Then again, the performances here are a little too strong for Fessenden's film to be anything other than a treat for fans of independent horror.

A heartfelt, deftly mature 21st-century reimagining of author Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, indie auteur Larry Fessenden's Depraved is a movingly emotional monster movie that packs a pretty mean punch.

Fessenden smartly incorporates enough of the Frankenstein lore while making it his own and capturing anxieties of the time it came out. This is one of the few Frankenstein adaptations that understands the material and pushes it forward.

Depraved is an aggressively ambitious modern take on the Frankenstein story, one with a disarmingly empathetic view towards the creature at its core.

I went into it not realizing that I was watching a Frankenstein remake. I figured it out quickly, but writer, director and horror acting legend Larry Fessenden makes the story fresh and disorienting from the beginning.

Acolytes, enthusiasts and patrons of Larry Fessenden take notice: His contemporaneously take on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is splendidly transcendent and though the publicity may prime you to expect a low budget Fessenden horror movie (5-star, of course), it's rendered in the thematically Shakespearean horror film Shellely could have collaborated on if she had cross paths with the Bard.
