As a veteran member of a South Bronx precinct, NYPD Sgt. Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) has seen more than his share of dark and horrifying events -- so many that they have begun to poison his soul. Sarchie further finds his beliefs and understanding pushed to the limit when he and his partner investigate a particularly bizarre incident. He forms an alliance with a renegade priest (Edgar Ramírez), who tries to convince Sarchie that real evil -- and demons -- do exist.

Critics Consensus

Director Scott Derrickson continues to have a reliably firm grasp on creepy atmosphere, but Deliver Us from Evil's lack of original scares is reflected in its shopworn title.

It's hard not to want to avert your eyes and that makes up, marginally, for the otherwise clichéd screenplay.

This is a smart blend of cop drama, thriller and paranormal elements.

The director Scott Derrickson seems uncertain as to whether he is making an exploitation pic intended to give audiences a few fairground-style thrills and frights, or a William Friedkin-style meditation on the nature of evil.

B

Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us From Evil comes across and is masked as a paranormal horror film, but really it’s more of a crime drama about a man who has his own demons...

Deliver us from Evil is quite a good horror movie, though it falls short of anything like greatness. It has a fantastic cast anchored by the aforementioned Bana and Joel McHale, and features some truly grotesque imagery and tense situations.

Run of the mill horror movie. Poor storyline has potential to be better but lacked creative execution.

Excellent movie. This is how a suspense thriller should be done. The film rolls with a few spooky crime scenes until at the end they find the guy they are looking for.

Music and story execution is unfortunately a large portion why the movie could not be as good as it presents itself. Yet the actors, horror visuals and premise make the view enjoyable to watch for the most part. It's decent enough to warrant at least one watch but that's it. Really liked this, gave a gritty edge to an already used idea. Breath of fresh air and Bana was amazing! Seen it multiple times now and still enjoy it every time.

It's hard not to follow some tropes when doing a possession film... However, when they're done right, the end result can be quite interesting even without being surprising. A plus for me is the fact that even though its a supernaturalbased film, it downplays this element. This is an entertaining film, solid cast, with some iffy dialogues, but a good script, a very competent directing (nicely shot, cinematography not great but ok, very crepy atmosphere, some well done jumpscares, very good practical effects and quite gory!) Not at all what I'd expect from a mainstreem horror, much better than some review darlings like the autopsy of jane doe.

A solid horror movie with good performances and some smart writing. Bana does his usual good job.
