A group of U.S. Navy engineers, led by Capt. Laidlaw (Taurean Blacque), are building an underwater base when they inadvertently disturb the lair of a gigantic creature. The monster attacks, and the crew, including lovers Collins (Nancy Everhard) and McBride (Greg Evigan), tries to evacuate, but the facility is badly damaged. After the exterior is breached, the increasingly desperate people become separated from one another, and the creature begins to pick them off one by one.

Competency isn’t the biggest problem. It’s momentum, in a movie that's very slow when it's not enlivened by Miguel Ferrer's performance. Go to Full Review

There are, in short, no human relationships aboard "Deep Star Six": just frequent frantic cries of "Mayday!" and special effects that bubble and gurgle a lot but never produce a single quiver of genuine terror. Go to Full Review

Draco S Dec 10, 2018 The creature is a poor design and sadly this is just like Leviathan, which I only reviewed a few months ago. I'm on the hunt to watch all the films surrounding James Cameron's The Abyss, the only film that wasn't a flop for this concept of a creature deep within the ocean. DeepStar Six has moments of cleverness, the scene with Richardson is a ripper. I didn't care for the character motivations and some of their decisions are just odd. Cunningham was an inspired choice for this film, but this was not a horror film and he feels out of his league here. The sea monster is a dud and lacks any menace. The end scene is exactly like Leviathan so I don't know which film entered production first, but there is a fair call for plagarism, I'm not investigating, the films are quite bad regardless. This could have been a fun film, but it is another poorly executed genre film. 09/12/2018. See more
Ron W Sep 18, 2018 The only redeeming element is braless Scarpelli's permanently erect nipples. She'll get you through the first half the movie. After that, you're on your own. See more
Finn R Sep 10, 2018 Ahead of it's time yet somehow also very antiquated for the late 80s. Amazing.
Ron G Aug 29, 2018 Classic 'Pompous Ass' acting Miguel Ferrer was so great at RIP. Underrated sci-fi horror film . It is a good cult favorite of mine !! See more
Luke S May 31, 2018 Something still magical and "cheese" worthy about the sci-fi and adventure films of the 1970's and 80's because they use 'practical' special effects and minimal crayon colored simple digital effects, that said most of the casts are pretty simple minded characters bordering on dumb and or aggressive and even stereotypical to a fault. Deep Star Six like Leviathan are deep water predictable stories that offer little smarts and few scares but remain wonderful fun films of our youth. See more
Leia L Jun 9, 2017 I found this movie from a "alien ripoffs " list and was incredibly surprised by it. I should say first, I've seen a LOT of horror movies. It's my favorite genre to the point that I have a tough time finding specifically 80's era horror movies anymore that are worth a watch. I was a bit taken back by the fact that this really isn't a ripoff of anything, unless you count 'having a monster' and 'an oppressive atmosphere' as being rip off worthy. I've seen many comparisons with this movie and I find them quite unfair, as I've seen those movies and they really aren't in the same category as this. Yes it's in the ocean, yes there's a monster. But, the monster is more of a backseat menace like in order movies. Which some people I see are sour about, as if every good horror movie has had the monster up in your face at all times. The monster is more so a setup for increasingly bad events to happen to the crew in this movie. The true horror lies in the setting, the deep ocean where any faulty mechanics can create a watery grave. I found the pace to be quite fast and exciting, once the movie gets started, it barely ever stops. I've seen some people say the acting isn't good or the characters are unlikable, but compared to most movies (especially modern flicks that are churned out super quick now) the acting is decent and the characters feel perfectly fine. I personally felt excited and interested to see how everything would turn out and I wanted to see someone make it through. The movie has an overall feel of the walls closing in and allows for any horrific ocean death you can think of to happen on screen. The monster designed by Stan Winston is just a topper on the cake for me. It has a fun design and adds another layer of fun fear to what's happening to the characters. This isn't an oscar worthy movie of course, but I don't judge movies based on that. I base it on how enjoyable it was and how it effected me. There are very few horror movies I find that use atmosphere effectively and I felt this one did quite well. I've never posted a critique on here, but I found the low score and LACK of critiques for this film to by quite saddening. There are so many worse movies than this that have actually made me angry, and to see this so low on lists is pretty unfortunate. It's most likely why I never heard of it to begin with, and boy let me tell you, it's hard to find a movie like this that I haven't seen. I recommend this movie and going into it with an open mind.
