Critics Consensus

Its fleeting glimpses of creature feature mayhem are certainly dumb fun, but Deep Rising cribs from far too many better movies to stand on its own.

Bemusing, how much money and effort go into the making of such a movie, and how little thought. It's months of hard work -- for what? The movie is essentially an Alien clone with a fresh paint job. Go to Full Review

There's some schlocky fun to be had here, though it's ultimately an underwhelming B-movie that forgot to invest its budget into an actual script. Go to Full Review

Whether Deep Rising was merely a stand-alone horror film pummeled at the box, or a galaxy-brained stealth prequel for a monster franchise that failed...there's one axiom that still holds true: They don’t make B-movies like they used to. Go to Full Review

It's a peak American 1990s action film, boasting numerous explosions, jet skis, New Gilded Age hubris, uneasy racial politics, anxieties about computer technology, surveillance, and state-of-the-art digital effects by Industrial Light and Magic. Go to Full Review

Mar 8, 2019 This movie has one key thing to remember, it is fun.
Leia W Mar 1, 2019 Thought it was a good popcorn movie. I liked the cast and the effects for the most part have stood the test of time. The last scenes with the monster were a bit wonkey and could have probably been done better practically but overall I liked it. See more
Leia L Oct 22, 2018 Deep Rising is a good film. It is an example of a well made B movie. A group of mercenaries hijack a cruise ship that happens to host a giant sea creature- You can't make this up and it works. This is a cheesy blast and both Treat Wiliams and Famke Jannsen are good and one wonders why they never achieved more stardom. The direction is sublime and the pacing is excellent. The effects would have been a hindrance if the film tried to be a more serious straightforward drama but because it is so tongue in cheek they work in favor. This is a must watch. See more
Abraham W Aug 21, 2018 Just re viewed this film this afternoon. Purchased the new Kino bluray. In trying to describe this film to my wife (who has never seen it), I could only come up with "goofy fun". This has always been a guilty pleasure since catching this on HBO/Showtime during its initial appearance there in 1999 or 2000. I caught it because Stephen Sommers name was attached and I really enjoyed his version of The Mummy. Goofy fun seems to be the right description for this B-movie. Bad one-liners, stock characters and disposable bodies - what more does a B-movie need. Truly enjoyable if you just check your brain at the door. See more

Hagrid L Jul 22, 2018 An embarrassing mess. Janssen and Williams have anti-chemistry. The more the script demands that they fall for each other, the less believable their interactions become. See more
