What to Know

Critics Consensus

The kinetic camerawork and brutal over-the-top gore that made Dario Argento famous is on full display, but the addition of a compelling, complex story makes Deep Red a masterpiece.

Director Dario Argento provokes excruciating suspense but gets carried away with bloody flourishes. As ever, Hemmings is awfully convincing. Go to Full Review

Argento, who's no Hitchcock, manufactures suspense with flashy camerawork, loud noises and pounding music. Then, all is garnished generously with gore. Credibility, which comes in a distant second, flies out the window in the process. Go to Full Review

It functions as a stylistic exercise in which Argento showcases his aesthetic of the subversive; unfortunately, however, his giallo horror narrative is far too predictable for me to take this dull thriller seriously. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Deep Red serves as the quintessential Dario Argento film, full of fantastically surreal...madness, anchored by dazzling cinematography, disturbing yet insidiously fun murder sequences, and the first of many banger [Goblin] scores. Go to Full Review

Mar 29, 2019 A highly stylized thriller with just a hint of the supernatural, Deep Red is perhaps the quintessential giallo. Brutal murders, flirtatious banter, and physical comedy punctuate an intriguing mystery plot made all the more eerie by the film's high contrast cinematography and deliberate soundscape, which juxtsposes the music of the progressive rock band, Goblin, with diegetic piano music, a haunting tape recording of a children's song, crisp foley, and periods of complete silence. Hermione S Feb 1, 2019 The acting is horrible; the camera work is so bad we laughed; the direction is terrible, and the score is just ridiculous. Iï¿ 1/2(TM)m super-disappointed that I watched this movie See more
Ron P Nov 19, 2018 There's a moment in Profondo Rosso that shook me to the core, but at the same time made me wanna revisit it right after the credits rolled. See more
Theodore R Jul 24, 2018 A horror masterpiece that combines a good mystery story with some frenzied gore and general brilliance in all aspects.
Jul 10, 2018 Dario Argento might be a film genius or just a regular director. That is not up to me to judge. However, the one thing I can say is that this film was just awful. The acting was bad at worst. The ill-placed background never moving and stagnant were more like a metaphor for this film. See more
