Critics Consensus

Narratively shallow, The Deep is a satisfyingly disposable thriller with commendable underwater photography.

The story, as well as Peter Yate's direction of it, is juvenile without being in any attractive way innocent, but the underwater sequences are nice enough, alternately beautiful and chilling. Go to Full Review

It never quite balances the adventure with the drama, but it’s far from unwatchable. Go to Full Review

The fact is that Peter Yates has knocked himself out doing masterly underwater action sequences and aquatic stunts in the service of a woefully crummy book. Go to Full Review

Finn G Feb 7, 2018 Late 70's suspense thriller about a young couple diving offshore wrecks in Bermuda in search of buried treasure. They find more than they bargain for. Really enjoyed Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset in the leads. The premise sets the film up adequately and we see some pleasant scenery. The scuba diving scenes still hold up well after all these years. The second half of the film, however, disappoints with unconvincing plot development and a villain (Louis Gossett Jr.) who proves more threatening than resourceful. See more

Albus W Jun 26, 2017 Good movie, treasure hunting with a little twist. Definitely dated, but hey, it was 1977. I enjoyed it. See more
Kylo M Apr 8, 2017 A wonderful, exciting, thriller starring Nick Nolte and stunning Jacqueline Bisset as a couple, who, while diving off the coast of Bermuda, come across 2 very different 'treasures' that attract the attention of a local expert played by the late, great Robert Shaw, and also some very nasty people, led by elegantly threatening Lou Gossett Jr. Features lovely cinematography and groundbreaking underwater sound recording along with the scariest creature since 'Jaws'! The scene with Bisset diving and then climbing aboard the boat tho! See more
