New York City newspaper "The Day" is in trouble. Even though editor Ed Hutcheson (Humphrey Bogart) has worked hard running the paper, its circulation has been steadily declining. Now the widow (Ethel Barrymore) of the paper's publisher wants to sell the paper, which will most likely mean its end. Hutcheson also worries that his estranged ex-wife is about to remarry. His only hope of saving the paper is to finish his exposé on a dangerous gangster (Martin Gabel) before the sale is made final.

Windy, self-righteous newspaper film, written and directed by Richard Brooks in a fair reflection of the way journalists think about themselves when they've had a few too many. Go to Full Review

Bogart gives a convincing performance all the way, from his constantly harassed deadline existence, his personal romantic stale-mate, and his guts in avenging the beating given his crime reporter. Go to Full Review

Really good newspaper pictures are few and far between. This one, while melodramatic, does all right by the trade. Go to Full Review

[The screenplay and the characters] don’t lack for real greatness, but the merit of Richard Brooks lies more in his knowing that cinematography is the art of petty details that do not strike one, and in his proving it through constant invention. Go to Full Review

As a film noir, it works moderately with its tale of extortion and journalistic ethics, but even by presenting a convincing role from Humphrey Bogart, it cannot correct the weaknesses of a superfluous and predictable plot. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

George W Jan 20, 2019 Deadline USA has been a tough film to track down, but with the inclusion on BluRay, this film lives into the next generation. The film is a love letter to free press and allows the film to unfold with a storyline that is worthy of the running time. The film is very true, compared to today's press, which is severely right wing, fear orientated and aimed at the lower educated. There is so much going on in the world, but the one thing we should be able to trust is unbias journalism. This film is about sticking to your gut and not backing down when all the cards are down. Bogart is the key to the film and delivers a great central performance. I hope this film develops into a cult film, due to the fact it failed at the box office and vanished for the better part of 50 years. Good old fashioned storytelling with a speech every journalist should watch. 12/01/2019. See more
Theodore S Apr 9, 2017 Why had I never heard of this movie. It's great! Terrific dialogue and some very spot-on portrayals of journalism life, such as the ode from female reporter Mrs. Wildebrant during the bar "wake." Loved it. See more
Theodore S Apr 8, 2017 If you want to watch a good old Humphrey Bogart movie I recommend this one. Richard Brooks (IN COLD BLOOD) directed this film about a newspaper editor (Bogart) dealing with the fact his newspaper is going out of business. Nevertheless, he decides his paper will take on the local crime boss and expose him for the murder of a young woman. Bogart does a really good job in his role. So do the supporting cast including Ethel Barrymore, Kim Hunter, and Jim Backus. Definitely worthwhile. See more
